Hi. How long should a FP dry after cleaning? Is it allright if I ink my FP after one hour of dry time for example? If no, what is the shortest time? Thanks!

Er....straight away usually, I'm generally rinsing it out to put a different colour ink in to use right away so the pen gets a rinse and a dry on some kitchen towel and filled.

The concern is not the well-being of your fountain pen, rather diluting of the ink, when refilling. Expelling as much rinse water as possible, then "wick-dry" the nib and feed, by standing the pen nib-down, on dry paper / under trous / old sock, for an hour. If dilution of the ink is not a concern, do nothing. Just re-ink and write with joy.

Actually, I find that with cartridges a wet feed helps wick ink into the feed to get things started. If using a converter or other non-cartridge filling system the small amount of water simply gets mixed in with all the other ink being drawn in.

I set the pen nib down in a small prescription bottle with a tissue in the bottom for an hour or so to pull the water out of the nib.

Agreed. I've inked pens before they were fully dry, and that diluted the ink a bit when I started writing with them. After a little while that goes away, but if the pen is fully dry before you re-ink it, you avoid that. Usually I clean my pens at night, let them dry overnight in a way like Sasha Royale said, and ink them the next morning.

I often ink right after cleaning.

Me too. Unless of course I am not refilling that pen.

If I'm going to refill the pen right after cleaning, then I'll move right over to the next ink after a wipe with a paper towel. I don't feel like the nib and feed need to be completely dry when I'm going to the next ink. More often than not, I'm going to fill again with the same ink, so I won't even clean it in those cases.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
