Advice On Which Flagship Pen?

I don't like the snootiness of the MB shops anyway and the above attitude assures that I will never own one.

Remember, MB makes their money selling the leather goods, fragrances, watches and jewelry not fountain pens.

I got an MB from Turcot in Montreal. MB stopped stocking any stores that wouldn't hold the watches and the whole deal.

Lots of places still have some stock remaining though, Stylo included.

Turcot is an amazing place and you will come away happier than you would from the official MB store in my opinion. The owner is great and his family have owned the place for 60 years. Plus it's in a swanky hotel. The other lady that works there is really nice too. (Actually, they did me a big favour and went above the normal customer service bar).

No affiliation except to tell you they are there as well.

Edit: also, it depends who you get at Stylo. Some can help you track things down more than the others.

I didn't even know about this shop!

People at Stylo do have good intentions but very little knowledge on their own products.

My next pen is most likely a Montegrappa Extra 1930, I'll go and see Turcot when the time comes (next year or the one after).

FWIW, just before Christmas, I was about to buy the Visconti HS but they changed the price from 600$ to 820$ at Stylo's. Still sad I didn't grab it at that price :(.

I believe that they are a nice writing pen. I have to admit that dropping into the Toronto store a couple of times has also tainted the brand for me. They didn't look at me as I browsed the pens and didn't look up when I stood near them at the counter. When I asked a question one of the women turned to me and said in a flat slightly annoyed voice, "Yas?" I said, nevermind and walked out. Oh, and there was 1 (one) pen on display in the Montblanc store window.

Looking for a black SJ Transitional Esterbrook Pen. (It's smaller than an sj)

If you have this kind of money to spend on a pen, you ought to know what you want, because this isn't lightweight material any more. .

It's not their flagship pen, but the MB 146 is an awesome daily user. Also, have you looked at the Delta Dolcevita range?

Dolce Vita is wayyy to big for me. I have really small hands, like 1911L is the perfect weight/shape for me. I was pushing it even with the HS.

Current Task Force:

Sailor Koshu-Inden Petite Blossoms, Sailor 1911L, Sailor Realo, Cross Classic Century, Faber-Castell Ambition, Pilot Cavalier, Lamy Al-star, and an entire insane asylum full of Kawecos I regret buying.

So yeah I returned the HS... Like people said, inconsistent fillings, nib was lovely but too wet for my daily purpose (dry inks like Salix or Pelikan 4001 would have helped but I AINT GIVING UP ON IROSHIZUKU).

So back in the market for pen again...

Current Task Force:

Sailor Koshu-Inden Petite Blossoms, Sailor 1911L, Sailor Realo, Cross Classic Century, Faber-Castell Ambition, Pilot Cavalier, Lamy Al-star, and an entire insane asylum full of Kawecos I regret buying.

There is this one lady at Stylo's who's kinda judgmental? I know I'm a student but that doesn't mean I'm trying to steal things just because I look at the Visconti and Sailor display case for a long time!

Everyone else are always super nice though.

Yeah, it depends who you get and what time of day and all that stuff. Also, I'm not sure pen shops hire pen people all the time - like any retail outlet, I guess. It's probably a good thing. I'd just clean out the stock room with my employee discount if I worked there.

But, pens...did you see the m800 Grand Place!?

Okay I literally just broke my goal of not paying for pens again like the day after I purchased the HS.... But hey, 300 canadian dollars ($220US) for a Vanishing Point Raden Water Surface is an insane deal...

Where did you get the Vanishing Point Raden Water Surface? I just purchased 2 of these fountain pens directly from Japan for $399 each + $8 shipping which I think is still expensive.

Forget about flagship and get something that writes and easily maintained. Flagship pens can be very often too unbalanced or chunky or elaborate or all of the above, and they could be taxing for the hand - and some wallets.

I would get Pelikan M600 for college :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
