Organics Studio Expiration Date

This is probably a silly question but I couldn't find an answer by searching this forum. The forum search only found one thread and it had nothing to do with my question.

Do Organics Studio ink expire?

I am wondering because, today, I pulled out a box of Organics Studio Gregor Mendel and opened it for the very first time. I bought this last year, or maybe it was the year before. I just never got around to trying it out until today. I noticed that it has what appears to be an expiration date written on the label: 5/16.

Does this mean I need to use up the entire bottle by May 2016? And if so, would it be safe to keep using it for many more years? It takes me aeons to finish a bottle of ink. It is very unlikely for me to finish this bottle in 5 years, impossible in 3 months.

That's not an expiration date. It's indicates "5 of 16 bottles".

Oh! I like your explanation. I am much relieved knowing I don't have to rush to finish this bottle of ink. :)

Funny that this would be 5 out of 16 bottles. It looks much like month/year to me. Now I wonder why 16 bottles. Surely they made more than 16 bottles. LOL

I am enjoying this uniquely shaded green ink. It is a bit lighter shade than I expected though. I'd like to check out other Organics Studio inks, however I understand they are no longer in production.

I had the same thought as White Lotus. As the label says "First Edition" perhaps it was the "first batch" they made of this color? That could possibly explain the small number of bottles.

Yes - Organics Studio would often release their final test batch of new inks as a small "first edition" bottling. This is what you have. It was mostly for fun.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
