Help Regarding A Plum 51 S

Let me first say I know zip about Parker pens. That will become very obvious. I read the plum post but most of it went over my head.

An older friend of mine used to own a sleepy little antique shop in SW South Dakota. She sent me a handful of pens to clean up and try and get working. Some were junk, some I couldn't separate the barrel and section, and one is a pretty Parker Vacumatic that seems to need a new diaphragm. In the group was a dark Parker that I looked at last night.

I found this with my pens and got all confused because I knew it wasn't mine.

I think it is either mint or near mint. It wasn't in a box. There is no flaking on the converter. The sac is clear and it is clean. It has a long clip. Ther barrel and section are clean and unscratched. The jewel on the cap is black and comes to a tiny point.

I can add pictures to the when I get home and can edit them to make them smaller and can load it to image hosting.

I need a ballpark value to tell her. She's retired and counting her pennies. I had zero idea there was anything special the Plum posts. Any advice etc?

There is a better picture over on the FPN Fb group.

The black jewel on the polished steel cap & the open aerometric filler all suggest that it is a Parker 51 special. Not a plum then, rather burgundy.

Is the nib steel/octanium or gold?

What is the date code on the barrel?

The nib looks like it is steel. I can make out Made in the USA, but I need either reading glasses or a loupe for any more detail.

I apologize it isn't a plum. I misunderstood.

Behind the "Made in USA" are two numbers. I think they are 50 but can't swear to it til I get home and the loupe.

Yep definitely 50.

Your pen looks like a burgundy Parker 51 Special.

It's a 51 Special - the cap, jewel and hoop filler are the giveaways - which I don't think came in Plum and will likely have a steel nib.

And I agree that it definitely doesn't look like a Plum.

Think nothing of it. No apology necessary. Most of the people posting here seem to think every dark Parker 51 is a plum.

That is a very nice pen..

My first foray into the slippery slope of 51-dom was a burgundy 51 Special from an Ebay seller that listed it as being "maroon". So I had hopes  (but it turned out it was definitely Burgundy, and most assuredly a Special. I paid about $40 US for it with shipping, but that was also about 3 years ago. You might check recent Ebay sales of 51 Specials for a ballpark of what it's worth.

I liked mine, BTW, but it doesn't get much use once I got a couple of 51 Aeros (and the Vacumatics, and -- last fall -- a very nice Laidtone Duofold with a semi-flex oblique nib...).

If they are not Plum they are most likely Nassau.

Ironically, one of the 51 colors I'm not overly interested in getting....

Indeed. We have recently been regaled with this theme. I am glad I don't care much about acquiring pens any more. The pics of verified Nassau greens I have seen would lead me to want one. It's an attractive color to me, but others want grander stuff. Pity Ariel Kullock didn't have Nassau green rod stock. I'd convert some of those ugly plums. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
