Jinhao X750 -- Far Too Wet

ColoBob

Recommended Posts

I'm relatively new to these pens, and recently bought a Jinhao X750 and filled it with Noodlers Bernanke Blue. I'm finding it far too wet, and it bleeds through every kind of paper I have. (Not that I have super-premium paper yet, I'm still new!)

Can this ink-flow be adjusted? and if so, how?

Or is it a matter of an ink that is particularly wet in itself?

I've been looking for info on adjusting ink-flow here, but haven't yet seen it.

Really appreciate any advice.

Is there a sizable gap between the nib tines, or does it look normal? If it looks normal, an imperfect seal at the cartridge or converter end is a probable culprit. Can you put in a fresh international standard cartridge, and check if the excessive flow radically changes for the better?

I love my Jinhao x750 but no way would it work well on standard copy paper, regardless of the ink. It's a wet-writing, medium nibbed pen. That's just not compatible with low quality paper.

You need to match that pen to high quality paper (Black n' Red, Clairefontaine, Rhodia, etc.) or get an pen with an extra-fine nib or a fine-nibbed pen with a low-feathering ink if you want to use it on highly-absorbent, low quality paper.

Thanks, Flounder -- Since I'm still fairly new to FP, what I think is normal may be suspect! But the tines look even and tightly spaced. I'll have to get another international standard cartridge to test your suggestion. Right now all I have for that is the converter that came with it. And of course, my Lamy converter and cartridges won't help!

Thanks, dvalliere -- your response confirms that the X750 is a wet writer for you, too. But I've gotten quite a bit of bleed-through when I've used my Rhodia notepad and my Black n' Red journal. I still suspect that my pen may be exceptionally wet.

Bob, do you have any blutack? You could try using that to seal up the converter, in lieu of a fresh cartridge.

Remove the barrell, and wrap a blob of blutack around the converter where you see it disappear into the section. Wrap aonther blob around the twisting knob where it meets the body of the converter - basically, where there are joins you can putty to temporarily seal. Then have a go writing with it.

I too am new to Jinhao pens, and with the first X450, I have also found it to be incredibly wet. When writing, the ink simply poured out on to the paper, and the slightest shake above would deliver a large blot on the paper.

This puzzled me, until I read the advice from @Flounder. Further investigation showed that I had not pushed the converter all the way in, probably because it is a very tight fit, and I had wrongly supposed it to be pushed fully home. Pushing it in the small extra distance made all the difference, and it now writes very well.

I have used Bernanke Blue only once and found it to be a gushing (ill-behaved) ink (Bad Blue Heron the same way). Try a dry blue, like Pelikan 4001 RoyalBlue. That always calms my gushers down, and works better on the cheaper papers that dval avoids.... ;)

Is this your first fountain pen ? Are you a recent ballpoint pen user ? What makes you think this pen is

malfunctioning ? On what do you base your analysis ?

The first temptation is to blame the fountain pen. I suggest that we begin by adjusting the nut the holds the pen barrel. Assure that the cartridge/converter is properly installed. Use heavier paper. Don't press so hard. Try the pen with a cartridge, to make sure the fault is not the converter, which can be replaced for $1. Now, let's see how much work and expense you want to invest in a $4 pen.

I don't mean to sound "snarky", but my tenth birthday gift was a new watch. I took it apart. I have all the loose parts in an envelope. The envelope is in my bureau drawer. A reminder.

@Ferrum -- thanks, I've tried that now, and it still seems the same. Just very, very wet. Far more than other pens I have. Thanks for the suggestion.

@TSherbs -- that's a helpful suggestion. I've been guessing that its the pen -- but I suspect now that it may be a combination issue. Very wet pen, and very wet ink? I'll try different inks in the pen, and see what happens. I used the Bernanke Blue in my Safari, and it wasn't quite as bad. Still a lot of bleed through, but at least it didn't seem to lay down as much ink.

@Sasha Royale -- No, I'm not completely new -- this is my third pen, and I've been using FP for over a year. Compared to my other pens, it puts down an enormous quantity of ink, and thus tends to bleed through pretty decent paper (not filler paper, I'm not quite that foolish). My Black n' Red notebook doesn't show the issue with my other pens at all.

Sounds like you've had a rough day. Sorry about your watch.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
