Open Question On A Cross

Hello,

Many years ago I purchased a Cross FP. It had an off purple cap (this is from memory, some variation of purple) and the barrel/body was black chrome. I wasn't as infatuated with fp's then as I am now, so all u remember is that I bought it from Staples. I don't remember the nib size, only that I used cartridges at the time. I've looked in catalogs, eBay, Google, yahoo, and I'm positive it was black chrime, but I can't even get a name to reference it. I lost it in a move, so I don't even have the opportunity to tear anything apart to look. Anyway, any help in id or name would be appreciated.

Thanks

That doesn't ring any bells offhand. Here are a couple of pictures of my non-Townsend collection of Cross pens, which I think covers most (if not all) of the models that A.T. Cross Co. has produced over the past couple of decades. Do any of them look like the pen you remember? (If you need closer photos of any particular pen, just let me know.)

Was it a Cross Metropolis?

I have several Metropolis ballpoints with that color scheme.

Sadly the FP pens are scarce now.

THAT'S IT!!! The color scheme is different (the body was a black chrome), but that's the barrel component that I remember and the "washer" at the end to post easily. Thanks so much for all for the help. Now I just need to track down the color scheme. It's just that you don't get too far googling "cross black chrome fountain pen," none of which are the chrome that I remember.

Thank you again.

I am going to marginally retract my gratitude to all of you. Apparently, there's only ONE available on the net in the color scheme that I have to have (note to sociologists: some people don't t have food or places to live, but I HAVE to &%$#!&^ have a fountain pen).

I remember buying it in a plastic thermoformed box at a Staples/OfficeMax for 9-19 dollars, bottom of the barrel close out stock. Wow. And I even went to school/college with someone who used to work at Cross too. Who knew if you hang on to (bleep) long enough, someone's bound to want it, or no one will in which case it becomes rare.....Oh well, this is a Cross forum, not a free market society blog.

I've always liked wet/med lines so I'll presume I had a M of some sort. I found the model in a broad, which I"ve never had a Cross broad before, so we'll see. I've just sent a Pelikan out for a cursive italic regrind. If that works out ok, a cursive italic Cross Metropolis sounds really cool.

Thanks again for your help (sort of...)

Hey, you asked for help.... :)

If I knew you wanted it delivered on a platter with a bow on it, I would have sent you my bill..... :D

It is one of the bad things in fountain pen land that if you want to replace something on an old faithful pen you're likely to run into difficulties...

Good luck finding the needed pen.

Oh, no, I replaced it. It was only $129-&139 more than I paid for the last one. You think I'm going to sit around with knowledge???

Arrived today. That was an expensive replacement, but I do love it, and I ended up getting the matching rollerball.

Thanks again.

Actually, it's my first Cross with a broad nib (not really a deco fan either but the nib is cool).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
