146 Nib Sizes Vs Starwalker Rollerball M

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'll be purchasing a 146 in the next days / weeks. Where I live there are no montblanc boutiques or AD's that carry fountain pens. I am therefore asking someone who will be traveling to bring it over.

I am debating on whether I should go for the F or M nib. I currently have a MB Starwalker that uses a rollerball M as a point of reference, how do the F and M nibs compare to my current pen?

If someone could provide me with some insight, you would make my decision a lot easier!

Thank you.

The Montblanc M nib is quite broad in comparison to non European nibs. I would say that a F nib will be closer to the line you currently have with your rollerball.

Have you looked on the Montblanc web-site where they show you the width guide lines for all of the nibs?

Thanks for your response! Is there a chance the F nib may be thinner than my current rollerball M? I would prefer if it were the same or perhaps slightly broader but not thinner...

Thanks again.

I agree with Chrissy. The F nib would be closer to the rollerball StarWalker M. I have 3 SW rollerballs, 3 SW ballpoints and 4 StarWalker FPs. I also have 2 146s. To be honest, Montblanc nibs are super wet and very broad. I would actually say a EF Montblanc 146 nib would be closer to the SW medium rollerball. The Fine would produce a thicker line than your rollerball M. But only slightly thicker.

So you want us to compare FP to a rollerball? Whats next? Comparing chicken to albatross? Car to a bicycle?

Saying that, Montblanc M nib was designed for ballpoint barbarians. It is very stiff, smooth, with even line. As close to a rollerball as you can get. 146 will write differently from a rollerball. If you are lucky it will be less smooth (although many are over polished) , have a touch of line variation and will give nice shading with the right ink.

Inked: Sailor King Pro Gear, Sailor Nagasawa Proske, Sailor 1911 Standard, Parker Sonnet Chiselled Carbon, Parker 51, Pilot Custom Heritage 92, Platinum Preppy

EF or F. The Montblanc M nib will produce a much thicker line than your current rollerball pen does. Good luck.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
