Looking For A True Blue. Not Blue/black Or Purple.

Hi all,

So I am trying to find a blue ink -- sapphire colour, or at least a rich blue -- that isn't purple. Sapphire inks tend to have a purple tint to them and I don't like that. I want a true blue that pops on white paper :)

Thanks in advance!

For a true blue I always resort to Visconti Blue. A bit on the dry side but the colour is just blue.

Consider Diamine Majestic Blue. I would recommend Noodler's Liberty Elysium too, but that's a Goulet exclusive and could be difficult to get in the UK.

In Diamine inks look at: China Blue (single blue dye ink), Asa Blue, Kensington Blue, Mediterranean Blue.

Washable Blue might not 'pop' as much.

Parker Quink Royal Blue, Sheaffer Blue

I have Diamine Majestic Blue and it has a very heavy red sheen. Most of Diamine's blues are purple/sheen.

Noodler's "Blue". Takes a long time to dry without smearing, but IMO a real, "true" blue. Visconti is good, just like Aurora, but both are rather dark.

The commercial name is Private Reserve's DC Supershow Blue. I call it " pure blue ".

Sailor Souten

However, it has a red sheen. Some thinks that it's a positive thing, other that it's a negative thing.

Aurora Blue is a pretty much a Blurple to my eye. I like it but I think it is very far from a pure blue. It isn't that far from MB Royal Blue, also pretty blurply to my eye. Next to something like Blue Velvet, you can see just how much purple-esque color there is.

ymmv imo, etc. & co.

Diamine Blue Velvet is pretty close to just blue but might have some hints of green to some eyes i guess but it is not blurple as so many blues are.

Asa-gao, which will sheen red on Tomoe River is on most papers pretty close to ordinary middle blue. Not perfect but an excellent overall blue color.

I threw together a few blues and can certainly show more Diamine inks. Writing sample below:

I tried that. I think it's mis-named. It should be "Diamine Boring Blue". It really is surprisingly dull and lifeless.

Also, it stained the sac in my Parker 51 Demi.

I don't think R&K Konigsblau or Blau Permanent have been mentioned. They are different from each other, but I think both potentially meet the starting description.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
