What Is A "s" Or Special Nib?

There is a tray of MB demo pens for sale on eBay now. In the photo you'll see a pen slot on the far right marked "S" and the pen reads "special." What kind of nib is it?

It is a kugel nib. It is basically a ball of iridium on the tip that makes the pen write like a ball point. It was abbreviated K as the point type instead of F, M, B, etc.

I don't know if we are supposed to post eBay links, but here is the exact title:

Mont Blanc Fountain Pen Demo Tester - Ultra rare 9 pen set with "Special" nib

You should find it no problem.

I have owned two of these sets in the past, one fully complete and one with the S Kugel nib pen missing. It makes for a very interesting day when you decide to ink them all with different inks :)

Think there maybe two of these sets running on e-bay at the moment as one of the sets (listed on e-bay UK) seems to be without the S nibbed pen

I am intrigued. So how does this 'special' nib write different? Anyone care to give us some info?

It's huge. A ball bearing of a tip. And it writes like a 3B, in any direction. It may even put down a fatter line than my Sailor Zoom and Music nibs.

My other pen is a Montblanc.

These demo pens are 146s, are they not? The description keeps talking about 149s, and this might be misleading to a bidder.

Yes, they are 146. I have not looked recently but I think the description was a "Le Grand 149" or something like that. The S nib pen is a 144 or 145, can't recall.

The S nibbed pen should be a 145

Hi Pen Nut. I remember your set. Very nice.

Any thoughts on why the 'S' wasn't 146 sized? Like the rest.

I never understood that.

One listed on e-bay uk with a buy it now of £1600 which is about $2,343. It has a best offer option but the set lacks the 's' nibbed pen. another mb has been included in the set as a replacement.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
