For anyone who collects or is interested in dip nibs, at some point or other you'll encounter Turner & Harrison. They were one of the larger steel pen manufacturers whose nibs are often found under someone else's name. They produced a great many lines of pens under many names as well as were quite willing to make pens for businesses, stationers or whatever jobber wanted their names on T&H's pens.

 

I was looking through an online map of historical photos of Philly and decided to see what they had on Spring Garden St.

If you look through the trees at that second building from the right, you can just make out Turner & Harrison across the top of the building.

 

The building is long gone. It was replaced in the 40's? by a larger factory building and that building now houses condos.

 

Anyway. Another tidbit of dip pen history.

I have a collection of old dip pens and nibs. Fantastic historical photo. Thanks. I have some Turner and Harrison nibs.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
