Flow

I haven't posted here in a while, but I am very pleased with this pen and wanted to share it -- a piece of English Yew from Royal Sandringham inlaid with a simple gilded branch with leaves and flower. The cap is inlaid with the Chinese ideogram for "flow." This took quite a while to design and implement, with satisfying results. Trimmed in ebonite and fitted with a Fine JoWo nib.

Thanks for looking.

I think the creativity is excellent. And the fitment appears to be spot on. Nice job!

I tried turning ebonite once and could not handle the smell. How do you manage to ignore the smell while turning ebonite?

Actually, I've come to enjoy the smell of ebonite and I'm getting better at distinguishing different qualities by smell, or at least, that's my fantasy!

Thanks for the kind comments!

I have found, that I don't mind the smell. However, SWMBO has a very sensitive nose and hates it. It doesn't help that my shop is in the basement, right below the bedroom.

I have an air cleaner for the dust, but that doesn't help the smell. I was thinking about getting some kind of charcoal filter to put on it when I am doing the ebonite.

What material did you use for the white bands?

My shop is in the basement as well. My wife not only hates the smell of ebonite, she also doesn't care for acrylics being turned. Thankfully, my lathe is next to a window and an exhaust fan seems to do the trick.

Lots of folks use pick guard for stripes. I like to use old credit cards!

Great way to get rid of credit cards!! (I hate debt)

For the white bands, hobby shops typically sell sheets of plastic. They also have sheets of copper and aluminum which is interesting to use as well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
