Andromeda Fp In Old Cellulose Acetate

Sandsini

Recommended Posts

Hi all! This is my first post here, I have been lurking for a little while and I thought I would post one of my new pens. I 'm calling this style the Andromeda, it's made from 95 year old Cellulose Acetate. Accents were done in black alumilite as was the section.

The cap to body threads are 13 x .8 x 3
The section threads are 10 x 1
The feed threads are Jowo 7.4 x .5
The nib is Bock #6 Medium

Width: 15mm
Length capped: 153mm
Length uncapped: 147mm
Weight: 23gr
Non Posting

I'm planning on a small run on this style and material, probably 5 pens.

Thanks for looking, comments and critiques are very welcome.

Cheers,

Eric

Thank you everyone! I was in love with the material the moment I laid eyes on it! It came as tubes so it was necessary to close the ends somehow so I decided to use very thin disks of black alumilite to close the ends and provide a subtle accent to the pattern. Plus, I am kind of obsessed with this clean-lined form lately, it's all I want to make. Funny how that works...

Stunning material! You were right by doing such a simple design: the material suffises itself.

Congratulations.

That is a beautiful design. It alsmost seems to flare just slightly along the barrel. I love it and that material.

Thank you very much Darrin. I think the flare you are seeing in the uncapped photo is a product of the camera lens. Its actually perfectly parallel.

I wish I could find more of this in other colors!

Beautiful! I like the simple shape. Nice workmanship.

How does working with the older material compare to modern materials?

Other than the fact that it was a hollow rod that I started with, it worked very nicely. I've, honestly, worked with modern resins that were more difficult to turn and glue up than this was. In fact I started one last week in a modern Italian "chips" patern that gave me no end of grief.

I just received a small batch of equally old French Galalith that I'm eager to get started on. I hope it is as easy to work with as the cellulose acetate was, but I suspect it will be more brittle.

Cheers,

Eric

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
