Anxiously awaiting to hear. Is it? Isn't it? Will he? Won't he? Did he? Didn't he?

Can you tell I'm just not into doing my work today?

For that price, you should grab it. If it's not what you want, I'll take it off your hands.

I bought it. It's hard to tell how big it is by looking since there is only about a three eigths inch difference in length from the transitional to the sj transitional. I asked for an accurate measurement but no reply. Wait and see.

I got it and it is a regular transitional not the sj transitional I want. I'll keep looking. Thanks for all your help.

Larry,

Here is another one on ebay. Five pens, the one on the right may be what you are looking for.

Looks like a full-size J to me.

Sorry the other one wasn't what you wanted. I try and determine by the space between the end of the lever and end of the pen. It's usually pretty accurate, but not always.

Same here, based on the length of the barrel beyond the lever, I really thought it was an SJ.

I'll continue to keep my eyes open. Before this thread, I wasn't aware that there were transitional SJ's, now I know my collection is nowhere near complete! I enjoy the search, so that's okay with me.

Just to remind you, I'm still looking. I have done my best scouring eBay and antique stores. I will continue. I appreciate you looking too. Thanks

I just *have* to ask: what is it about a black SJ Tranny that's so desirable to you? Because you've been bumping this thread for awhile (And no, I haven't run across one, AFAIK; I did however get the Claudio joke... B)). Are you trying to fill a gap in your collection? Scratching a nostalgic itch? Something else? Because for me black is the least desirable color, but the last couple of Esties I've picked up ended up being black because I'm chasing nibs and that got me the ones I wanted (I'm about four or 5 shy on the complete lineup of 9xxx series nibs, plus there's a couple of others that I'd like to get but either have never seen them for sale or the price is more than I want/can afford).

Hi Ruth,

Yes, that one pen would complete my Estie collection (the way I want it to be). I have the six basic colors in dollar pens, 3-rib transitional, button transitional, j's, lj's, sj's, and five colors in the sj transitional. That black sj transitional is what I would like to fill in that big hole in the pen tray. It's not the white whale, and I don't have a Spanish gold coin nailed to the mast for the finder, but it would be nice to get.

Ahhh...but do you have ALL the button transitionals? I know of three generations - 3 rib toaster top, button top screw-on unbranded clip, and I just found myself with a Black button top screw-on branded clip.

Hi gweimer,

No, like I said, this is just the collection the way I want it. I know that there are many iterations of these pens including color variations, feed variations, icicles, etc., etc. but I just figured that my criteria would drive me crazy enough.

Are you still looking? If so I have a couple of them with either the round or 3-ribbed jewel.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
