This is a picture of an Esterbrook SJ and an SJ transitional. The flat bottomed transitional is only about an eighth of an inch shorter than the SJ. I need a Black transitional. Please look around and see if you can help me. Thanks very much. Larry

I've got a black transitional J that I've been thinking of selling. Unless you mean another SJ, maybe we should talk?

Thanks Water, but I am only looking for a black Transitional SJ. I tried to show that in the original post and title but I don't see an edit button for that.

To make it clear: I want a black transitional sj. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm still looking. I'll bump this every once in a while. If you want me to stop, find me the pen. :) Thank you

Nicely put. I have seen one sj transitional, one red one I bought incidentally. Good luck.

If I come across one, I'll let you know. I think I have a gray tran SJ in my pile of pens waiting for me.

You are going to have to troll eBay, flea markets, estate sales, antique stores, etc., just like the rest of us.

I don't remember. I probably would have bought it, if it was in the bag. That was when I got the Black Dollar pen from you.

I do have a short black transitional, that probably came from you earlier.

It's just like gambling, the chances are very low that you will win. But the casino sets the slots to allow a score once in a while so you will keep coming back. And I do.

Good luck, this is also the one I am missing, I have the other 5 small transitionals. I'm not really actively looking though, I assume I will stumble onto one at some point.

Have I told you that I'm looking for a Black Esterbrook transitional lately? And don't call me Claudio!

Still haven't seen one. I got my first SJ transitional recently, but it was in copper. Just as you keep asking, I'll keep looking. This was the first SJ transitional I've seen in real life.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
