Edson, Inky Fingers

Whenever I uncap my Edson (M), I find ink on the section. I've learned to grip farther away from the nib, but I still get ink on my fingers. I think what's happening is the ink from the nib creep transfers to the cap which then transfers to the grip section when I cap/uncap the pen. Anyone know how I can prevent this? Thanks in advance.

I have had similar issues. Make certain that the pen is always "nib up" when not in use. I bought a plastic toothbrush holder and I keep my pens nib up all day long and never have a problem. Be sure to gently rinse cap and air dry. If this continues, then you have a hairline crack, happened to me, and then off to repair shop.

I have had ink seep out from the breather hole when my middle finger covers it. i just grip farther back to avoid this situation. What you show in the photo looks excessive. After a good cleaning and drying, it that much ink leaks out, you likely have a crack somewhere. Have you compared the issue between a cartridge and a converter to see if the converter is the issue?

A few questions.

 

Is this pen new to you?

If you have it for some time, when did this start?

Are you using a converter? If so, what type? You could have failure of the mouth of the converter. and especially the newer converters with the all black plastic mouth piece are know for similar problems.

Try a cartridge for a while. Either a proper Waterman cartridge (best) or an standard international one (these should fit properly)

If you have no leaks with a cartridge the converter is at fault.

If it also leaks with cartridge, have it serviced.

Thanks for the response. I do store my pen nib up in my Penvelope 2, so maybe it has a hairline crack as you say. Do you remember how much it costs to repair and did you send it to Waterman?

I asked and it's probably purely coincidental but have an Emerald and it acts the same yet my Ruby does not.

Interesting. It seems like an issue that should have been addressed. And the breaking rod issue, which also seems to be rather common. Did you send it to Waterman for repair?

No...not yet.

Well it could be worse. The inlaid nib on my new Edson got visible scratches after two days of normal use. Looks like something on the onside of the cap is scratching it. I sent it back to Waterman for repair.

Coincidentally, so does my Emerald, although nowhere near as badly. I do not get inky fingers because a natural grip is higher than where the spot(s) appear on the ring part of the gold decoration on the section. Spots appear after a day or two of lying horizontal (the pen that is). After today I am trying nib-up.

 

It is disappointing given how well it writes, enough to irritate a bit without being enough to seek repair as yet, unless I could take the pen apart myself. I changed the converter for a standard modern Waterman model with what seemed a temporary effect. After I exhaust the present ink I shall try a cartridge, and have a good look at the proboscis under light and magnification along the way.

 

I have seen the exploded diagram on the Edson but nothing on process for disassembly so that I could check the feed for cracks.

I received the pen back, and they have replaced the defective cap and section. No more visible scratches, but after two days of use, I can see micro scratches. I think this pen has some design issues. It is a shame because I absolutely see why some people just love this pen. It is very well balanced, comfortable and surprisingly practical.
