Suggestions For Next Pen

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to the fountain pen life. I started with a Lamy Safari, and have since been using a Conklin Duragraph and Pilot Vanishing Point. I'm taking a weekend trip at the end of the month to visit Houston and I'm planning to stop by Dromgoole's and pick up a new pen and maybe some ink, paper, etc...

My budget is somewhere around $300. I was looking at pens like the Sailor 1911 and Pelikan m400.

Am I heading in the right direction? What are some other suggestions?

Thanks!

Based on the size of the Conklin and Pilot VP, I'd suggest Faber Castell Ondoro, Pilot Custom 74, TWSBI 580, TWSBI ECO, or Platinum 3776.

I think M400 would be a little too small if compared to the Conklin and VP.

I think all of the above are good options to try. Don't dismiss the M400 out of hand - try it, you might be surprised. Just because it is smaller than your others. I find it nice to have a variety of sizes of pens. From my Esterbrook SJ which is the smallest pen I have to the M200 (about the same size as the M400) to the TWSBI 580 and True Writer Silver Anniversary and Lamy Al Star. (especially posted) I am not saying don't try some of the other suggestions, but if you are going to a pen shop, try several in your price range. Different sizes and weights and nibs. You might end up with something you didn't expect.

You are going to have the opportunity to go into a pen store and try them out! You don't need to limit yourself on brand or model. I'd only recommend keeping your budget intact as you look.

Some of the best ones made today are from the Japanese Big 3 - Pilot, Platinum, and Sailor. You can find excellent pens in your pre ice range from these manufacturers. European brands like Pelikan and Lamy will fall into your price range with a few less options.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
