Maybe glued on top of a paper like that? I don't see how you could get the design to stand out with the emboss/deboss? you'd need a very simple paper to get the height differences to stand out enough to see it. Unless maybe silk? but it would have to be very thin...

And if glued, how would you protect it so it wouldn't pick up dirt from being used?

PS but I forgot to say how very lovely that is... especially since the deboss image itself is also beautiful!

Yeah, thats why I am looking at a paper covering this time, becos the Nautilus cutout may be too thin.

I do have fabric in graduated colours which can be interesting.

But I am not sure if the emboss can stand out.

  • 3 weeks later...

This is Journal 237 Happy Dragonflies II made on order.

Its an A6 sketchbook in landscape format comprising an assortment of papers that can take watercolours.

I decided on 3 kinds of paper as can be seen here prepared in the bookblock.

To maintain some symmetry, the middle Signature is different paper, and so is the first and last Signatures.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/IMG_0796_zpsa2u1ubqs.jpg

One of my favourite motif is the dragonfly , as popularly used by the Japanese.

Dragonflies signify metamorphosis - welcoming change - towards better things.

This one is black fabric.

My earlier one was blue fabric.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5321_zpsthyz50a2.jpg

After folding over, the edges are sealed with glue to prevent fraying during the stage when the flyleaves are installed.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5324_zpstfz2wk30.jpg

I decided to stay with a spine accent as in my earlier attempts.

It looked great with a olive green accent that matches the green grass on the fabric.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5441_zpskeddrax8.jpg

I wanted some accent , something cheery to perk things up a bit.

so i went for mango accents.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5445_zpsntmzben4.jpg

and matching mango elastic bookbands

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5446_zpsg9vlnmgz.jpg

yellow stitches

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5452_zpscuhiwbdq.jpg

as in all my landscape journals, the ribbon is omitted becos its not practical - too long.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5457_zpsdq0f46y5.jpg

the short edge was kinda short but i still wanted at least 6 stations to keep the binding a little more robust since its gonna be a sketchbook that will probably be handled a little more than just on the desktop situations.

Decided to space out the stations symmetrically.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5458_zpswrpvbyg4.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5455_zpsz3z8tka1.jpg

with the yellow accents in view

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5456_zpskraszfot.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5465_zps3iqbxo13.jpg

The namecard slot was centralised

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5466_zpsgihdd3kf.jpg

and Colophon

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5463_zpshopygete.jpg

The different papers in the bookblock

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5467_zpsii0i2d3k.jpg

7 Signatures, 4 Folios each

Total 112 writing pages.

Writing paper is :

NATURALIS Vanilla White, 135g, Smooth

NATURALIS Absolute White, 135g, Matte

GALGO Felt 150g (textured)

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5443_zpshmpsdl6o.jpg

The fabric is textured

The whorls are purple in colour

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5447_zpslqbzehl7.jpg

I usually put the spine bookcloth flush with the fabric

here you see the fabric goes under the bookcloth

Its a little more troublesome this way but it solves the problem of snagged edges after years of use.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/237%20Happy%20Dragonflies%20II/DSCF5451_zpsbxu6xx3a.jpg

I like the middle signature paper GALGO Felt 150g (textured)

The cream tint and the texture plays well against the artwork and watercolours...

Managed to find honey gold thread...

a bit thinnish , but i wanted a gold coloured thread

Bought from ETSY in miserable quantity and its way too much wax

I wished it was flat profiled thread but its not.

This is only about 0.5mm diameter. I usually use 0.8mm for a little more heft to express the exposed stitching.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/209%20YUZEN%20Plovers/209A%20A5%20YUZEN%20Plovers/044_zpsihqij92e.jpg

The advantage is that there is less bulk in the bookblock because the thread is finer.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/209%20YUZEN%20Plovers/209A%20A5%20YUZEN%20Plovers/049_zps6hzj5e2s.jpg

Beautiful YUZEN paper ...

Golden accents

Its a picture of a flock of plovers flying over a sandbank

The sea waves are also rendered in gold colour.

The blue bookcloth matches the blue on the paper most beautifully ...

This is Journal 210A YUSEN - Gold Leaves

A5 size

My 69th TR Journal

and

18th A5 size TR Journal.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5658_zps2elkhooq.jpg

Trying at least 6 variants of this at one go on my workbench ...

Finally got round to using this sheet of beautiful Japanese YUSEN paper.

Gold leaves with grey dots on a matte black background.

Front

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5632_zpsw7pjeevq.jpg

Rear

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5637_zpsuskk0kdd.jpg

Bands deployed

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5638_zpsiohq9zpt.jpg

Black dimpled elastic bands

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5639_zps3ft3twse.jpg

The motif was fine enough to allow a spine and corner accent in Jet Black bookcloth

so I employed the usual embossed motifs

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5633_zpsdnasylv8.jpg

This time I made the card underlay for the emboss , to be a little bit thicker .

To make the emboss crisper, I glued wetter, making the bookcloth softer and more malleable, making it hug the emboss edges tighter

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5634_zpsmihkgror.jpg

As usual , the cover paper dives under the bookcloth

A technique I do to protect the edges from snagging

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/210%20YUZEN%20Gold%20Leaves/210A%20A5%20YUSEN%20-%20Gold%20Leaves/DSCF5636_zps7bl3hg3x.jpg

I decided on a gold coloured theme

Gold coloured threads

I like the one on the right, although I do think a thinnish strip of black cloth under the stitching would also work.

Yeah perhaps 🙂

Been looking at my past journals with straight line spine accents - somehow just feel they can afford some variation.

They tend to look more like ledgers.

Hahaha thanks for your kind words ...😊

But I actually sometimes DO give away journals (apart from my usual friends and relatives etc ) from time to time .

I did that this year to FPN folks as a gesture of appreciation for their 'virtual' but warm friendship all these years. 😊

One of the challenges of using materials for the covers, is finding a way to minimize wastage, especially if the cover material is precious or you can't buy them again even when you want to.

For any given material, I would find ways to maximize the number of covers that can be covered in that material.

The handmade and handprinted paper I bought from Japan is one such example.

Its size is about A1 lengthwise , and being handprinted , its one of a kind and there is no exact duplicate of it in any way.

Another example are the handmade marbled papers by the Italians.

Such kinds of paper are not only unique but also costly.

Sometimes the orientation of the patterns or prints is another constraint.

You can only use them in one particular orientation.

These are the initial considerations when starting off with a fresh design of cover material for my journals.

I finally plucked up enough courage to try out the handmade papers ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/KARAKAMI%20paper/011.jpg

I started with the yellow maple leaves KARAKAMI papers

very nicely done

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5709_zps37bnrbuc.jpg

Like maple leaves floating down a stream ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5710_zpsaapveaud.jpg

sometime ago , I came up with this idea of saving paper by reducing the width being used.

A straightforward way is just using a narrower dimension,

and then using another material to cover up the remaining width.

Like the spine accents that you commonly see now in my large journals.

In the early years , I used to do straight edges that overlap, but I wasn't satisfied for two reasons ,

1) the straight edge is kind of boring and predictable,

2) and more importantly, what overlaps remains visible.

Like an emboss.

So , I addressed these two issues by

1) developing this zig-zag pattern for aesthetic interest ; and

2) now , using the geometry to turn a problem into an advantage.

zig-zag pattern on the spine

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5692_zpshcuxcjae.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5693_zpsijla4gdk.jpg

now covering the covers with less (reduced width) yellow material.

It saves a mere inch or so , but when you add up the inches across the entire sheet of the paper, you have gained a significant quantity of paper that becomes usable.

It could also mean being able to cover one more cover.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5694_zpsmjk4vmg8.jpg

next comes the part about addressing the underlayer that is covered by the spine accent , yet visible - like an emboss.

I do this by paying attention to the underlayer,

I cut it like so ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5695_zps1ibs9qnv.jpg

Now there is a pattern created - those triangular points

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5696_zpsmimztnd7.jpg

It will show when it is covered later.

adding on my usual trapezoidal shapes in my spine covers

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5698_zps5lsdxdb0.jpg

The overall effect is achieving multiple layers of an emboss ...

The point in this is that embossing is not only in silhouette or outline, but also in layers.

You can use multiple layers to create bas relief .

In this picture, you see 3 layers of emboss -

the grey base,

the yellow layer , and the

white topmost layer.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5701_zpskied2obl.jpg

I chose a dark Indian Red bookcloth for the spine accent ...

to match the maple leaves

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5731_zpsoc6szvjs.jpg

Here you see the triangular points of the yellow paper underneath ...

( glue still fresh , not dried yet, so the surface of the bookcloth dont look flat and even yet)

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5732_zpsaiux3tou.jpg

The finished look

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5734_zpsnbhieela.jpg

The 3 layers of emboss ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5739_zpsh3yc5gxj.jpg

This technique is very useful, if your covering material is in short (precious) supply.

It is also very useful if you are covering your A5 size covers using scrapbooking paper.

Scrapbooking paper is nice becos of the extremely wide variety of design patterns available.

But its size is exactly 12" x 12". (304.8mm x 304.8mm )

A5 covers are approx 150mm wide.

This means there is not enough material to wrap each front and rear cover completely, using just one sheet of scrapbooking paper.

You would need 2 sheets.

But you can use only one sheet , by employing this method described above.

I will demonstrate this sometime soon.

another observation ,

At this point, the spine accent sometimes looks visually overpowering .

This is becos the stitches are not in yet.

When the stitches are there (also a matching mango yellow), it wont look too strong anymore.

The elements will all blend in.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/KARAKAMI%20238%20-%20241/238%20KARAKAMI%20-%20Yellow%20Maple/DSCF5738_zpsi30bbahb.jpg

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
