This is Journal 206 YUZEN Cranes I completed.

My 10th A5 size TR journal.

With the bands deployed ..

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/008_zpsg83doov2.jpg

this time with the new bands , light grey colour to match the greys of the cranes

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/009_zpsajzgkxfg.jpg

We went for white stitches , to match the white of the cranes ..

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/010_zpsafcqmlj2.jpg

Full spread ...

White threads were chosen becos I wanted both covers to be unified across the bookcloth spine accent , I wanted something white to be that 'connection' visually.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/017_zpsxnmqp4qj.jpg

Now with the matching flyleaves in view ...

and matching ribbon pagemarker as well ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/018_zpspyfh16aq.jpg

The spine detail ..

The threads could be done straight (and not slanted) as well, but I wanted some visual interest here

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/020_zpskmxhvglj.jpg

The stitches are seated in the debossed portion of the spine accent ...

to give that little protection away from abrasions and getting snagged...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/005_zpstykt8jct.jpg

We didn't want the cranes to be outshined,

So it was a matter of finding hues that could take the place of background (subdued) colours.

One option was a deep purple , to match the purples of the cranes ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/012_zpsan9wmx9s.jpg

We went for the deep purple magenta hue that matched the bookcloth deep colour ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/206%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20I/003_zpssntqwyim.jpg

The emboss is flushed flat (well ... almost... :D ) wherever two different materials come together in a joint/seam.

I don't have a deep purple pen either... nor a magenta one, actually. So I will make do with my blacks, browns, blues, reds, greens, and whites. Or the demonstrators. No worries, any pen will shine next to this. And a joy to write with between the covers.

Excellent. I must get to writing more in my journal, ... to fill it up so that I can get another of your masterpieces.

Thanks

I was very keen to try out the other YUZEN paper.

After the purple cranes, it sparked off another idea.

An idea of doing a matching pair.

So this is an attempt on the other Crane design.

The first step is laying the YUZEN paper on the covers ...

But this time round, I decided to remove the YUZEN paper where the emboss lies ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/004_zpspcwahlck.jpg

Here the Yuzen pieces of thin paper removed - where the card emboss is going to sit.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/008_zps2jf6mtlu.jpg

I am making an improvement over the purple crane attempt, cos I noticed the trapezoidal embossed parts , though nicely delineated, were looking a tad thickish.

Removing the Yuzen paper underneath solved this problem.

Here, now the card underlays for the emboss, are glued into position

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/014_zpswp95rwet.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/017_zps7dwen6oh.jpg

Now the final stage, laying the accent spine bookcloth into position

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/020_zpsuiqix7th.jpg

Here you see the emboss now slightly less raised ...

The effect is subtle , but noticeably , the emboss is less thick and visually more proportionate ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/022_zpsixvzx9f6.jpg

Beautiful print artwork ...

A pleasing blend of hues...

Here you see the Yuzen paper diving under the bookcloth, continuing this technique in my journals carrying two materials that meet.

This is done to shield the bookcloth edge from exposure to abrasions.

One of the challenges also of exposing bookcloth in this manner is the way you cut the bookcloth.

If you are not careful, you can end up with frayed edges of bookcloth.

This zigzag cut of the bookcloth had to be cut in two steps to avoid the fraying.

A very sharp snapblade cutter at the kinks, and a rotary blade elsewhere.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/026_zpsutyz0wlx.jpg

True to the symbolic meaning that cranes represent in Japanese culture, you can see that there are attempts at depicting pairs of birds ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/RFLTF4T_zpsrbnfrkcr.jpg

The idea I had was to make a matching other ...

The other would be opposite - the bookcloth is the main covering, and the accents are the Yuzen paper.

Here , the covers are covered with bookcloth.

with the card underlay for the deboss/emboss.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/019_zps9fy9fkw4.jpg

whatever is cut out from the first set of covers now is glued onto the exact same position on its matching pair of covers.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/027_zpsvniv02z7.jpg

The matching pair ...

The Jet black bookcloth matches the matte black of the Yuzen paper almost perfectly .

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/RQ8ILD1_zpsfcwvlfbd.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/RW8E3Q1_zpsdzmt1ljh.jpg

I am thinking of using bright red threads - to match the little splotches of red on the Yuzen paper.

:)

That black really makes the cranes stand out more. I almost wish I had waited and bought this one instead...

Can you make the same one for me later, on a sort of lay-away plan? I do have to wait a little while... but I want this one...

It may be better for me to unfollow this thread, ha ha. :yikes:

The black with the cranes is amazing. The contrast is just perfect. The pop from the red is not distracting. I really need one of these with a lovely paper in this new design. I'm really loving my 2015 version but this is just lovely. I should have waited but... Not waiting is a good reason to have both. You are definitely getting better with each journal. I've been asked many times where I got my journal when I use it outside of the house.

Life isn't always what you make it. Sometimes it just falls in your lap and you have to deal with it.

Sure ...

My pleasure ...

But I think you should wait and see the blue sakura , and gold/black leaves first .... :D

They are equally stunning designs ....

I am gonna try the blue sakura next.

This is Journal 207A YUZEN Cranes II , the matching half of the earlier one featured above.

55th TR Journal A6 size.

Whatever that is cut out on the spiine from the #207 , is mounted here on these covers...

Same red accents

Here the black covering is GEMATEX Jet Black Bookcloth , a nice matte very black fabric.

It matches the matte black of the YUZEN paper - also a very dark intense black that is very very consistent in tone throughout the paper which is about A1 size large.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/207A%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/DSCF3457_zpsra2bfldh.jpg

The place where the stitches sit are not debossed, so this is one feature that can be improved.

At the moment , I dont have an idea how yet ...

Here is the matched pair together ...

Thats a PILOT CUSTOM 823

( I dont have a bright red pen :( )

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/207A%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/DSCF3474_zpso7grsoqj.jpg

I feel that the trapezoidal cutouts on the spine are too small to reveal the beauty of the Crane design.

I am thinking a smaller, more finely detailed motif may work better .

So which means the blue sakura Yuzen paper and the gold/black Yuzen paper may yield better results.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/207A%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/DSCF3478_zpstgdwlf0i.jpg

When shelved, you still can distinguish which is which , but its very subtle...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/207%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/207A%20YUZEN%20Cranes%20II/DSCF3480_zpsla2rhgmq.jpg

Some people use paired journals - ie, one given subject matter , but each recording opposing views/thoughts...

Very beautiful. But I am not so sure about using them as a pair, or even wanting the matched one. You're right, a smaller pattern might work better for that idea.

So bring them on, those other patterns. I will follow your advice and wait, though I must say I love those white cranes... and if you had only made that one book, I would now be in serious trouble about it. Such beauty. :puddle:
