The only converter that ?I can see as available for the Lamy a Safari is the one which has a bright red bit on the end....anyone know if there's another kind which would do? It's merely a cosmetic/aesthetic effect thing....I don't like seeing the red part, when the ink is a different colour( or at all, actually, especially in the transparent Vista)

To my understanding (I've never actually tried myself) the Lamy Z26 converter with black knob will also fit Safari/Vista, it just doesn't have the little nubs that hold it in place. Perhaps someone else with direct experience can chime in and confirm.

I think the Z24 is only available in red. It would bug me too in the Vista.

Perhaps some nail varnish would allow you to choose your own colour?

Im glad it's not just me....the redbut: why do they make it like that, for goodness' sake?

a good thought - the nail varnish - and a memory flashback to my teens/twenties, when my nails were my 'signature'(very long, manicured, none of that stick on stuff, those were the real thing, baby....and was I ever vain about the them...had around fifty different colours; loved red, even then, and two of my favourites were Mary Quant Jezebel( in a very beautiful bottle) and Coty Rembrandt Red....)

Wandered off topic somewhat, but a rather enjoyable trip down memory lane, so thanks for that....

The red Z24 and black Z26 are interchangeable in most pens. The nubbins on the Z24 prevent in being used in 1 or 2 models but the Safari/Vista is obviously not one of them. The black Z26 will fit all Lamy c/c pens as it's basically a cartridge replacement. Also, the Z24 and Z26 are the same price (or should be).

FTR, the Vista isn't actually sold with a converter by Lamy. It has the slots for the Z24's nubbins but that's because it shares the same moulding as the Safari and Al-Star ranges. If you are concerned about the visible red piston knob on the Z24 (which I can understand), get the Z26 converter instead.

Alternatively, take a black permanent marker to the red piston knob.

Excellent advice as always Martin. My experience of permanent markers is that they only deserve their title when the are on my thumb!

Good luck Alexcat, I think that Martin has shown the way with the black coloured Z26

Three solutions:

  1. Use black Z26 converter, as Martin says.
  2. Pull red handle off Z24 (I've just tried it) and replace with black Z26 handle -- probably not worth it.
  3. Get some paint for plastic models (Airfix, Revell, to name but a few)

Regarding solution (3), I am now really tempted to have a Z24 with a Duck Egg Blue handle as I was also intrigued by the name when I used to glue together WW2 fighter planes when I was a kid. Or you could have a battleship camouflage pattern, or pearlescent pink, opalescent white. With a variety of Airfix paints, I could customize my handle for each ink that I use.Oh, the possibilities are endless.

Quick! Pass me my paintbrush!

Perhaps we could award a prize for the most imaginative Z24 handle photographed in a Vista.

Cheers,

David.

Adhesive tapes are another option, eg electrical tape or gaffer tape. You'd need to check what space is available in the barrel though. Green/yellow striped anyone?

Martin, don't goad me or I might do something that everyone regrets!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
