Hey all! I am new as yesterday and i have already been made aware of a small group that meets to discuss fountain pens. Could you all fill me in if there are any others or if anyone is from Pittsburgh. I really love this community and hobby and would love to meet other fanatics! I am so happy to be here with all you fine folks. God Bless You all Michael

Hi Mike,

I am from Pittsburgh and I am also interested in a Fountain Pen group. I got into Fountain pens last year and would love to connect with a group. Have you heard of any that meet on a regular basis?

Thanks

Pat

I am not from Pittsburgh but my son graduated from Pitt and we almost always stopped at the antiques mall in Somerset when we returned home (NJ) from one of our visits - the pickings were generally slim, but I on one occasion I did score an NOS Sheaffer Cadet Tip-Dip and a nice Parker P51.

I noticed that there was a pen gathering planned for yesterday in Bakery Square. Joshua Sasmor (sasmor@setonhill.edu) was the contact listed on FPN. It would be good for you to get acquainted with two other FPN members from the Pittsburgh area: Ron Zorn (Ron Z) moderates the Fountain Pen Repair board and is a font of knowledge on all things fountain pen (and a heck of a nice guy as well; there also is "inkstainedruth" who is a very active and genial contributor on FPN (sorry Ruth, I do not know your full name).

Welcome to FPN, you will learn so much here!

Hopefully you will get to the next meeting, which will probably be the third week in February. We often meet on Wednesday evenings. Some people couldn't make Wednesday this time so Josh moved it to Tuesday, and we were crammed into the back corner alcove (along with some regular patrons at other tables) because most of the Panera Bread was taken up by a local mah jongg group....

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
