For those interested in the different materials and when they started to be used I ran across a little tidbit.

"Milk Goods"


A.L. Salomon & Co. have been given the exclusive handling of the new German goods made from cows' milk in the United States and Canada. The line comprises two styles of penholders, a long and a short one, in assorted colors and a paper folder or letter opener in mottled brown stock.


These novelties are new and represent the latest advances in scientific manufacture. The process by which they are produced is briefly, the milk is taken and put through some manipulation which removes all the water. The residue is used in the manufacture of these goods.


The coloring is remarkably brilliant and clean, particularly the reds and blues, while the brown and transparent colors are almost like amber and glass.


The penholders retail at 10 cents each and the folders at 25 cents each. There is opportunity to work up a big trade in them because they are such novel articles."

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
