A Review Of Namiki Emperor In Vermillion Urushi

Fantastic review! Thank you so much.

I am hoping that one day I will be able to buy this pen. The Japanese eye-dropper is possibly the best filling system available today. It's simple and effective. It's also quite an elegant design.

Would you mind posting some photos of the case (and a link if you have one? This pen writes too damn well (and my life is too untethered) for it to be relegated to a desktop.

This is not the case Shuuemura referred to but it looks like it might do the job.

And on sale for 20 bucks !!

Napa Leather XL Single Pen Case
This supple napa leather pen case has a single zippered entry
Fully lined with a jacquard nylon to protect your investment

Intentionally oversized to accommodate the Namiki Emperor and other large oversized pens

Thank you Mr. Rene :D

I am sure this beats the Emperor in dimensions, albeit nib size is same. Aptly called the Yokozuna. :yikes:

There was also a sailor emperor in the 1920s...sailor called the nib size 60 (it was supposedly sailor's largest nib, more in the linked pic)

I am expecting a reply from them :D

Though Yoda says, "Lazy, they are"

Sonik

Thank you very much for the wonderful review and lovely photos.

I have an identical Emperor but with the older 14K nib and I really love it.

Regarding the Sailor size 60 nib, while, it is a large nib, it's far smaller than the Pilot <50>. In fact, Sailor had a size 80 as well, but the largest nib Sailor produced back then was the size 200. This is a super rare nib and I am lucky enough to own a pre-war Sailor pen with it :)

Would it be possible for you to post a comparative picture of that nib with the emperor 14k nib?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you Nikolaos for sharing the info regarding Sailor. (Sailor Size#200 nib :yikes:) I feel that, to write with the Vermillion#50 or to take its picture is much more pleasurable than the effort spent!!

Like Mew here, I also need a comparative glimpse with Sailor#200. :notworthy1:

I was unable to get the correct color in the picture as you were able to. :)

I have inked it up with Kobe #39 and the nib width seems acceptable. Ofcourse it will get narrower over time because ink gets dried up and more saturated inside the barrel and probably reducing flow as well.

Balance is impeccable. I don't feel like writing with other pens I have after getting this. :)

The color looks great in visvamitra's review here. I had a bottle of older sailor red grenade :)

I too share the same conclusion, "balance is impeccable". And I am probably using the m1000 more frequently now during travelling. :)

Yes, I got the ink at the same time as the pen, so I inked it up it. :)

Ink has nice lubrication and the pen is wet writer so using up ink will not be as painful as I had expected.

Plus, red pen (vermillion) needs a similarly colored ink, at least for the first filling.

Every pen feels too small when compared to the emperor and i have quickly grown used to it's size. :)

May I ask how you take photographs so that I can get the accurate color next time? It looks a bit orange in this one I posted earlier.

Best Regards,

Mew

Usually for these photos I prefer afternoon sunlight, at low to medium focal lengths (< 70 mm), so that the colors do not brighten like they do with phone cameras + artificial white light..

Hope you give it a try :)

Hi guys,

Sorry it took so long but here's a comparison photo of the modern Namiki Emperor #50 next to a vintage Sailor 200. The 200 was the largest and probably the rarest vintage nib that Sailor made. This one dates from 1922. Only a couple of them are known to exist

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
