Grand Palace

I just got an email from nibs.com announcing a limited edition of the M800 in the Grand Palace colors. As I already have that in a M600 pen and ballpoint, I think I will pass.

Hi all,

My Grand Place cost $199 new in the box several years ago and the material makes it easily my nicest looking pen. That being said, I can't imagine paying $680 for the new larger model.

Regards,

Craig

Well, this was a surprise. If I didn't already have the 600 series pen, I'd definitely want one of these.

Afraid having 10 M800's and the M600 size of this pen will not deter me from having to have this one!!

I'm pretty close to putting in a preorder myself. It's a very pretty pen and, well, I'm a bit of an M800 junkie anyway.

I think it is in reference to the Grand Palace of Brussels. I had second thoughts and went ahead and put in a pre order. This pen seems to me to combine some elements of the 620 Grand Palace and the 201 Bayou. It has the swirled acrylic in browns, blues, and cream, in both the body and cap and a black ( or maybe dark brown, I hope) section and piston knob like the Bayou. The only thing about the 620 I do not like is the coppery looking section and knob.

All in all from the couple of pictures I have seen, it is rather striking and elegant in appearance, without being very formal.

Why the second thoughts, if you don't mind my asking?

Just like the colors and M800 in general!

Yes! This is a beautiful pen. It might be my favorite looking Pelikan.

Too bad they didn't use the same lighter (?copper) color for the section and piston knob that they used for the City Series Grand Place. It was much more attractive.

+ 1.

I think the black piston knob and section create an asymmetrical look when the pen is capped or posted which somewhat detracts from the visual balance of the pen. Still, one of the most beautiful M800 and I'm terribly tempted.

Too bad I already pre-ordered the vibrant blue, since I would have preferred this one. I hope they are still around in a few months, so I can get it.

For the record, the name is "Grand Place," not "grand palace." Think "town square" not "king's house."

Appelboom is now reporting that the Vibrant Blue 800 will be released in April (not February as previously understood).

Pelikan themselves supplied the February release date for the Vibrant Blue but it is always possible for things to have gotten pushed back. It does seem unusual to release the Vibrant Blue at the same time as the Grand Place.

For what it's worth, I like the look of the M800 better than the earlier M620. The black accents give more contrast than the copper and I like that appearance.

Exactly

And yes it's Place and not palace! I know not why, I typed palace once and got it stuck in my mind.

I reckon I'll stick to my M620 San Francisco.

I saw that La Couronne du Comte also had the date for the Vibrant Blue pushed to April and, since that's where I ordered from, I contacted them. They say that there is an expected delay with the Vibrant Blue but that they are working to get the first pre-orders shipped still in February.

Also, they say that they will have the Grand Place but didn't announce it yet because they are working the final details of the pricing. So, it seems that this is not a US only release.

So, that is good news for me and very bad news for my wallet :D.

Yes my wallet may just take a big hit. WIth this one coming out, an the bid I have in on and old Marlin 39a Mountie, .22 rifle, my discretionary purchases for ther first half of the year may well be ended in the first month.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
