Only One Ink

Only one ink, but perhaps a number of pens.

My initial thought was Noodler's Black, in a 5 gallon carboy. I want a well behaving ink, that is most normal things proof.

But then I thought, as marvellous as the ink is, it is relatively saturated, and might result in cleaning problems in the odd temperamental pen.

So my second thought was a crate of Pilot Blue, in the 350 ml bottles. Safe enough for pretty well any pen, and waterproof to boot.

If I only have one ink, pretty is not going to come in to it. What does matter is reliability and permanence.

Although, if I had a handful of full-size Sailors (Pro-Gear, 1911) then perhaps a few gallons of SeiBoku. It looks sooo niiiice coming out of a full size Sailor nib.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Noodler's 54th Massachusetts because it's worked great in all my pens for a couple years and it's a nice blue-black with a lot of permanence. I always have a pen inked with it.

Second choice would be Visconti Blue.

Favorite pen/ink pairings: Edison Brockton w/EF 14K gold nib and Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; Visconti Pinanfarina w/EF chromium conical nib and Noodler's El Lawrence; Sheaffer Legacy w/18k extra fine inlaid nib and Noodler's Black; Sheaffer PFM III fine w/14k inlaid nib and Noodler's Black; Lamy 2000 EF with Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; Franklin Christoph 65 Stablis w/steel Masuyama fine cursive italic and DeAtramentis Document Blue; Pilot Decimo w/18k fine nib and Pilot Blue Black; Franklin Christoph 45 w/steel Masuyama fine cursive italic and Noodler's Zhivago; Edison Brockton EF and Noodler's El Lawrence; TWSBI ECO EF with Noodler's Bad Green Gator.

I would not want (nor do I need to) to make this choice. As my fountain pen collection settles into the pens I truly enjoy, my pen journey now focuses on inks. I haven"to found the "one."

Difficult one. Perhaps Noodler's Prime of the Commons??? Which despite being described as blue black I persist in seeing as green once it dries.

I can't decide what color to limit myself to, let alone an actual ink, and I don't have that many.

If I HAD to have only one ink - thankfully this is not the case - I would go with my one tried and true ink - Waterman Inspired Blue (formerly known as Waterman South Seas).

Probably PE Turmaline. I know it's not available anymore but I have 5 bottles ... Since I plan to outlive them, then I could switch to another color. :D

Hmmm, upon reflection, I would probably choose DeAtramentis Steel Blue.

Nope, it would definitely be L'Artisan Pastellier Callifolio Bleu Ultramarine. . . Or was that Bleu Pacifique . . .

Thankfully, this is a moot question.

I don't think I could do it. :( I've always had lots of coloured pens, and I'd need/want at least a few inks: one serious colour and a couple of more 'fun' colours.

I was once a bottle of ink, Inky Dinky Thinky Inky, Blacky Minky Bottle of Ink!

Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

End of story.

I would seriously consider this one!! Lovely shade of red/hot-pink.

That said, limiting myself to only one ink would take away all the fun for me. Might as well go back to using Pilot G-2s.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
