Thanks for an elegant and enjoyable comparison. I'm very fond of Ambre de Birmanie, but your display makes me want to check out Golden Sands as well. I like the bright sunny looks.

 

Edit: What think ye of R&K Helianthus?

 

I wouldn't say it's "gold" but it's a lovely colour that I enjoy.

AWESOME comparison!!!!!!!!!!.... :wub: :wub: :wub: :wub: .. .I LOOOVE My gold inks!!!!!!!!!!!!!... Not ashamed to say I have 95% of these inks.. Only missing the chinese one and the scented JHerbin orange, thus... not missing much. :lol: :lol:

Excellent comparison.

 

My favorite 'gold' ink of all time was Pelikan Khaki, only available in cartridges. I had high hopes for Iroshizuku Ina-Ho, and would happily have bought a bottle, but it lacked the depth of Khaki. I bought a bottle of Shinkaichi, but it's a light yellow-green, so ditto.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!
 

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Alas. I ran out of it years ago, long before I was doing such exotic activities as Swabs and Ink Tests. I could search my past journals, but I doubt there would be anything I could scan. Will try, though. It was a unique color with great shading.

I have--and love--Golden Sands. But your photos of Shanghai and Shoreline blow me away! Not sure I'd purchase Shoreline if it's going to grow some sort of goo, but I'd definitely purchase the Shanghai if I could get my hands on it. Lovely!

Nice review, thankfully you had a link in one of the recent threads.

 

A question: why are some gold inks green?

 

Gold can have a variance from very very yellow to more reddish or more silver-ish, but green???

I made a review of Kobe Ink Shinkaichi Gold 22, but to me it is definitely some kind of green...

Gold color depends on the alloy composition. It ranges from greenish yellow gold to rose gold, to white gold, and those all have varying shades.

Some countries have more "typical" gold colors in terms of what's manufactured and sold there, though of course lately with globalization, there's a great deal of mixing. Russian yellow/standard 585 gold used to be more towards rose gold; it was warm with a coppery tint. USA yellow gold tends to be quite yellow with no hints of red. I had an Indian jewelry store nearby years ago that sold paler yellow gold Indian jewelry. Rose gold has been "trending" in the USA in the recent years (though real rose gold is not pink like so-called "rose gold" anodized aluminum dye used for Apple products), and white gold has been popular for quite a while.

The Lion is part of Sailor's nano-pigmented line of STORiA inks, so it's completely waterproof. Yes Maisgelb is gorgeous.

Thanks Lgsoltek for an amazing review and I love the different types of samples. As one who finds it easy to succumb to “ooh, shiny” I am pleased to see that looking at these I find Diamine Golden Sands to be my favourite (which I already have) and the one missing is Pelikan Edelstein Amber (which I also have). So no more shopping for me, for now.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
