A Former Lurker Finally Makes An Account! Hello To All! :)

Hi! I'm Isay from the Philippines, a medical graduate preparing for my board exams. I've been lurking and reading threads here for 6 months now and think it's about time to make an account. I'm an active member of the Fountain Pen Network-Philippines where we have our own forum as well, as well as regular monthly pen meets and an annual Fountain Pen Celebration (with free pins/bookmarks and swag!). Looking forward to getting to know the international FPN community here as well.

I enjoy a wide variety of pens. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I amassed 20+ pens and 20+ ink bottles the past year. These are mostly modern pens. My daily carry usually includes a combination of the following: a Lamy 2000, Sailor Professional Gear, Platinum 3776, and some budget pens that I'm not afraid to take outside of the house like my Pilot Metropolitans, Kakunos, and Platinum Plaisirs. I'm awaiting a Parker Duofold Centennial and my first Montblanc 149.

Here is my first vintage pen: a 1928 Parker Duofold Sr "Big Red" with my bunny pen rest. I'm having some slight issues with it. When newly inked, it's smooth and writes like butter, but it has a tendency to dry out and skip if unused for a few days. Is that normal for vintage pens?

Welcome !

Very nice "Big Red". It was a great leap forward by George S. Parker. I like using my vintage pen. It is no trouble to use it every morning, even if only to write "Good morning, Duofold." Please take additional care. the old hard rubber has become brittle, after 90 years. Enjoy.

Thank you Sasha! Yes, I probably should use it more often to prevent drying out.

Re. bunny pen-rest: +1 on cuteness!

I would also be interested in knowing why your pen doesn't write smoothly, but I fear I don't have ideas myself. I did experience this with a (Mont Blanc) pen I ended up having repaired many years ago. In that case, the person doing the repair said I had damaged the feed by cleaning it in hot water and admonished me never to do that again. (I don't use the word 'admonish' light

y...) He said it would cause something in the feed to swell irreversibly. (I knew even less about pens at that time than I do now.)

Anyway - Glad you're here!

Kababayan! 😁

Welcome to the forum! Weird enough, I'm not a member of FPN-Philippines...I should probably make an account there too 😅

Have you tried flushing the pen thoroughly? Maybe there's dried ink in the feed that's impeding the ink flow. Or have you tried a wetter ink? You can make your own pen flush, or buy from everythingcalligraphy.com (no affiliation). I think they have R&K pen flush in stock. Good luck with the pen! 😊

Ah! Perhaps it's because I'm still such a fountain pen newbie, but I, too, am 100% charmed and distracted by your adorable bunny pen rest :D (I love bunnies, so I'm susceptible to most bunny things.) So cute!

Also, welcome! :)

Nevermind me! I'm just an inkling, a mere pigment of your imagination...

Dang it 😂 I didn't even bother to look at the date of the post. Serves me right for perpetually lurking in "New Content" 😂

Yes, I suddenly spotted that someone had resurrected an old Introductions thread

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
