Problems With A Lady Agathe

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a Lady Agathe together with its pen tube, but I'm having some issues with it.

The pen didn't come with a converter, and some research here suggested a Monteverde mini converter would fit. I got one, and while it fits in the tube, it just won't connect to the connecting nipple - there's some resistance to insertion, but it feels like I'm pushing the converter onto a cone and the converter just pops back up.

I've tried Pelikan mini cartridges, but they won't filt in the barrel.

I've now sourced some Waterman mini cartridges. They slide straight on to the nipple, but don't grip - they're very loose, and ink just goes everywhere.

No ideal where to go from here. I'm also wondering if there are known fakes of these pens floating around. The pen looks like the real deal according to pictures I've seen online.

Thanks for any suggestions.

After reading your post, I retrieved my Lady Agathe from my drawer of seldom used pens. I don't know what cartridge was originally used but I use a small Pelikan cartridge. It is a snug fit because the base of the cartridge is the widest part but it seems to work.

It's not my favorite pen but I just refilled the cartridge to put it back in my rotation.

As soon as I began to write with it, I remembered many of the reasons that it is not my favorite pen.

I like the 18K nib but I don't like the way it feels in my hand.

I doubt you have a fake.

The Lady section grips are the same as the Executive pens, plastic.

I use an Executive and find that Waterman cartridges push in but grip and seal on the outside diameter and not the nipple inside which only enters the cartridge a short distance.

When I use a converter the chrome ring is a very tight fit in the plastic and again only goes about 4 or 5mm. While I know the Lady pens cannot accept Waterman long cartridges or converters do you have one to hand that you can try as an experiment for size.

It sounds as though your grip has expanded. Please though look up inside the grip to confirm the nipple is still there and not broken off.

For a very small cost Dutchpen has a couple of replacement sections at $20 + post. It just might be worth grabbing one.

Yes, the nipple is still present inside the collar. I have tried a full size converter and the chrome collar is a snug but not tight fit. Full size cartridges are a very loose fit, just like the minis. With three wraps of tape around the collar, a mini cartridge will sit in the section, but I can't see it being ink tight.

I've had a look at Dutchpens listings, but the lady sections sound like they are all plastic. Is it possible to transfer the gold plated metal part from the Agathe section to a plain plastic one?

OK your pens section looks like this,

While the grip is gold plated or a sleeve it probably retains the plastic core. I have never owned one so cannot be too sure how the grip is manufactured.

Either way, the aft end has expanded enough to prevent it holding the ink tank.

Disassembly of the section will be difficult so you have three options,

1. Make or have made a permanent sleeve to fit and bond into the aft end.

2. Continue to wrap the converter/cartridges.

3. Fit a new section and do not worry about it being black...at least it will work.

Ooh, gorgeous with that tube!

Thanks for that picture, Force.

  • 4 years later...

This is an old thread, but I am reanimating it on account of the title--a friend has a Lady Agathe that needs a new feed.

Question 1: Any suggestions where I might be able to find a replacement feed for a Lady Agathe (either in the EU or N. America)?

Question 2: Trying not to break anything unnecessarily, is the nib/feed assembly a friction fit that can simply be pulled out?

Thanks.

Cardriges for ladies pen Agathe or Alice or Charlotte are only the small cardriges from Waterman . And if your section is broken you can easily change to an executive all are compatible same size.

Sorry for my bad English but I write from France and frenchs are not so good in foreign language

Thanks, I have always used short Waterman cartridges, but I was wondering if short intl standard carriages work as well. I guess not. The section is fine, as is the nib. The plastic feed is what needs to be replaced.

I am looking for a replacement feed and advice on the best method swapping it out.

If that is not possible, it is good to know a section from an Executive will replace the OE section.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
