I Hadn't Noticed This About Moleskines Before...

I like a test sheet in any paper product. It's a great idea, and I'm glad you got a sheet. Good for moleskin. I use mine with gel pens and lead pencil. It's pretty well known now that fountain pens are not for moleskin, but for other purposes they're just fine.

It never even occurred to me that the brochure in the back of a Moleskine might be the same paper as the notebook - generally these things are printed on much thinner paper.

Like most, I've pretty much given up on Moleskines for fp usage - the bleed-through is usually awful. I have a Hobbit special edition that I started using for ink sampling (I thought it would be a nice but practical keepsake) and the paper is so fp-unfriendly that I fear I've been wasting my time, except perhaps that it serves as an example of "worst case scenario". The only ink that doesn't bleed through significantly is Noodler's Bulletproof Black. Maybe cellulose-reactive ink was invented in the Shire...

Personally I like Moleskines.

I employ usually fine nibs and ballpoints and never had troubles with this brand.

When I search the top --> Fabriano is absolutely the best (from Italy, of course)

;)

Greetings from Italy to you all !!

Reviving this topic...I just bought a Leuchtturm and was happy to find inside a small brochure printed on the same paper as the journal pages. We should encourage other brands (at least the high-end ones) to adopt this practice. I'm looking at you, Apica, Rhodia, Sigel, Shinola,...

I wanted to like moleskine but it just isn't happening.. I like the form factor but the paper in unpredictable and I think that's unacceptable for the price.. black n red and rhodia for things that require quality and likely clairefintaine or leuchtturm for daily notes

The thing about molie is they don't care about fountain pens. Period. They're great notebooks as long as you know what you're getting. That shouldn't be a mystery around here.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

Same here but most people complain about the unpredictable quality and the high price. I just bargain hunt and pay a lot lot less for them. Since I like all types of pens, I just pick out pens that work well in them. I will not pay full retail prices for them. Edited by Studio97

Yeah, neither do I. There is a molie online store and they have clearance sales every three months. If you don't care about the color of the cover, you can get molies for about 40% off. Make a big enough order and free shipping.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
