Not sure if it has been suggested yet, but how about a Sailor 1911 Standard? One can be had for about $70 USD from Engeika, and in my opinion it is a superior pen to all the others you are currently looking at.

That's an option too. A bit on the short side maybe...

My Custom 74 with medium nib arrived today. I writes perfectly straight out of the box.

The line width is almost identical to Lamy steel medium, maybe a hair thinner.

Could you post a sample of your writing?

Or you could go for a Samurai Pen:

I would personally go for the Pilot CH91 or the C74.

I own both the C74 <SF> and CH91 <SM>. If you are going to get a decent gold nibbed pen, make sure you take full advantage of 14K and get a Soft nib. I have a MB114 with a normal 14K nib and it writes nail hard. Both my customs have a wonderful springy feel when writing.

Since we are bringing this thread back to life maybe writing samples might help. All medium nibs and using the makers ink from cartridges.

Since I was the one who started this thread, I can now tell you that I have one Custom 74 medium and one #3776 Century medium.

I like the Platinum better because the Pilot writes slightly too wide for me. The width from the Platinum is more or less ideal for me.

Great post "Jar"!  That handwriting sample will be useful to many people.  THANK YOU!
