Massive Rise In Vintage Esty Prices.

Recommended Posts

Etsy has never exactly been known for fair prices... Quite a few sellers list a decent looking fountain pen for months at an outrageous price and then wait for someone who either doesnt care about the price or isnt knowledgeable.

I think it happens more for vintage sheaffers than any other brand

The post is about an Esterbook that is nicknamed Esty or Estie. I had the initial reaction you did. That is was about the website etsy.com until I looked more closely.

Hmmmm...I still see "etsy" in the original post I referred to, talking about price trends on websites, for fountain pens in general.

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

Read it one more time. I typed Esty, which is a commonly used shot cut term for Esterbrook. Sometimes our brains can trick us when reading.

Ahhhhhh....there's where your confusion rests.

I was quoting "Etsy" from Mon34480's post, not referring to yours. Scroll back to my post #14 and you'll see what I mean. :)

Reminds me of the the old joke about the dyslexic agnostic who asked if there really was a dog. :lticaptd:

I spelled it that way once on a religion test in school. Sister Mary Elizabeth was not amused ....

Well, back on topic.

I saw an Esterbrook at OPS with a 9048 nib and the asking price was $60 US. And it was from a presumably restored, and that's cheaper than I've seen just for the nib (when I've seen them at all) on Ebay by a fair amount. But (a) it was a reputable dealer and a known quantity; (B) it was a full J, IIRC; and © it was easily inspectable. But I decided that was just still too much for what I wanted to pay (and I was on a budget). So instead I spent about half that and got a black LJ with a 9284 nib at a different table. I have a couple of 9128s at this point, and a 9788, so I can wait on 9048 (I found the second 9128, on a black SJ, for twenty bucks at an antiques mall earlier this year -- so they're still out there to be had).

Which is why I prefer to spell it Estie.

Ah, I see where the confusion came from now. You are correct, I thought you were referring to my original post.

I just missed out on an Estie M2 with a 9284 for under $20.

I need to stop reading your posts, Gary. This chick does not need to find yet more Estie models worthy of adoration. :gaah:

This is why there is no massive rise in Esterbrook prices and why I don't think I could sell my pens for even the bargain prices I got on them. Fellow cheapskates.

I think maybe the nuance of my thread title gets lost in translation.

It wasn't meant as literal, or factual. I was being sarcastic towards the people who put $100+ price tags on Esterbrooks that aren't worth $20. I know there is no real massive rise in Esterbrook prices, I was merely making fun of an auction I came across, using sensationalism in the title to add a bit of humor.

Ok, I get that. Sarcasm is well placed. The prices are too high by about $40 or so. Many of the nibs were the less common and pricier, though. The sellers of ebay stuff often ask more than items are worth.

@ PaperQueen -- +1 on on that sentiment. And that's with me probably looking at *every* Esterbrook at *every* table that had any at OPS....

@jdllizard -- The ones who put $100 price tags on Esties are bad enough. It's the ones that put $100 price tags on Arnolds that I don't get....

So do I, and that's how I've seen it here at FPN until this thread.

Here's one close to home, but not an Estie and not ebay. Perhaps in Finland the 21 is worth that much. Local markets might vary. Condition is the all-important factor of price.

I like the agnostic joke better.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
