Need Id! :)

Hey guys,

I was talking about pens with my family and my grand aunt took a box out with a few old pens in it.

I found this Waterman in there, body condition isn't that great anymore, looks like it spent some time standing in the (sun?)-light for quite some time. - Hard rubber? Smells slightly rubbery..

The nib however is in excellent condition and writes smoothly dipped. :)

It, however, does not have any trace of a number anywhere.

Nib is a #2A [Waterman England]

imprint reads as follows:

____Waterman's

made in IDEAL ENGLAND

____FOUNTAIN PEN

What struck me as funny is that the lever won't align with the clip, or with the nib (though that can be explained).

Anyways, here are a few pics:

Thanks! :)

Also, if someone could guess the period that'd be ace! When I'm at it I might just try to find out whom it belonged to..

Probably a No.3, but with usual hesitations about Waterman IDs in general and UK production even moreso. 1935, about; possibly a little earlier or a good deal later.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

Thanks!

What was different with UK productions?

Just that they 'conveniently' didn't stamp the bottom with the model number?

Period seems right I suppose, I wonder if I can actually find a receipt somewhere.. Not sure my greatgrandmother would have had this one together with her 92. Must be a pen around somewhere from before too..!

Also, is it 100% soakable material? I'm kinda itching to get a new sac in it..

Edit; Just stumbled upon one on ebay claiming to be celluloid, however, this looks more like hard rubber oxidation, doesn't it? (especially on the cap)

Just seeking confirmation...

GCS93: why should these components all align? I've not been aware of that previously -- ever. I have always believed it to be completely random -- where they lie in relation to each other...

I had assumed that they usually align since they do on all other pens I have so I assumes they would normally..

But after looking at more Watermans I see that this isn't the case at all! :)

On many of the older pens, with threaded caps, the thread is two or three start so you have that many options to get them close.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
