New Kid In The Network!

Hello All,

I've been looking at fountain pens for a while now. I really like the feel of using such a writing instrument as well as what it says about me.

I write every day a fair bit at work, get to sign documents, comment prints. Others need to read my handwriting and a fountain pen does tame my writing to something much more readable.

I like how beautiful the pens can be, making them the equivalent of a nice piece of jewelry.

I finally jumped in and ordered myself a Nakaya Briar wood with fine nib a pair of weeks ago. It has fulfilled all my expectations and more. So I'm hooked!

Jean-Michel

(note darazs is a Hungarian word that means wasp for those of you curious enough to ask - I am not Hungarian though)

Welcome to the Network, darazs! I "re-discovered" fountain pens in 1997 and cleaned out my old 1965 Sheaffer Lifetime pen, took it to work, and have been using them ever since. I immediately loved how wonderful they write (why did I not use them through college and the many years after? Sigh.) I loved seeing the glossy wet ink flow onto the paper, how it wrote without any pressure, how dark and rich the ink looked after using ballpoint pens. My collection grew over the years until I retired. Then I discovered Goulet Pens and Brian Goulet's wonderful videos (many dozens) and my passion soared to a much higher level. I have too many pens now, most inked up, and love using them Making excuses to write (journal, letters, notes). And, here you have thousands of helpful, exciting pen lovers, sharing all the wonderful aspects of pens, inks, paper, writing, etc. You will spend a lot of time here.

Here is a link to Goulet's wonderful videos: Check out the "Blog Index" on the right for links to "Tips and Tricks", "Fountain Pen 101", reviews, etc. I spent many many hours watching all his videos when I retired in 2013 and there are probably twice as many now. I've seen every one of Brian and Rachel's videos and spent a lot of money there. Two orders have been shipped to me this week alone!!

Great to have you on board. Would love to see a photo of your pen, I'm not familiar with this pen.

Welcome !

I am more fascinated by the innovation and engineering that solves various problems, through the years. All the science that brought us away from the sharpened stick and berry juice.

Enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the welcome messages.

Graystranger, I like your story and will check the Goulet's videos.

I did not manage proper photos (the little took too much time last night), but you can check that review on FPN.

I did choose for the light version though.

A very stunning pen, just classic. I know it feels perfect in the hand. Love it. Thanks.

Welcome! I am also a Nakaya fan and purchased them when John Mottishaw actually travelled to the DC shows to sell them. Now, other companies are getting my attention and money because there's something about a $1,000.00 or more pen that just screams, "See me in person and decide whether or not you want to spend your hard earned money on me!"

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
