Anything you want to know Greg :) . In fact I was thinking of writing my experience in obtaining the "S" Nib. All I can say is, it was an EXPERIENCE ! Awesome people at Pelikan Germany. Of course this might not be the right forum to talk about it though ;-) .

Was this an official Pelikan service?

Super cool. I'd definitely like to hear about it if you end up writing it up.

Looks like that is one looooong tooth. What a monster nib. And seems to be a medium sized italic, then? I love those. I have 2 factory italics by Pelikan, one on my 800, and that is really too broad for comfort for normal writing. Bought a spare medium for it...

But to go back to topic: Love my Waterman stubs.

The local squirrels are jealous , and you are right it is medium to wide italic. They destroyed a few to get this right...

It is a pity that Pelikan has reduced the variety of nibs that they offer with a new pen. If I may ask, when was it that you bought the italic nibs ?

Stubs on waterman are indeed very pleasant to use, especially Carené , with the right ink, it's magic.

I'd love to get a stub for my Carene. Was that a factory stub? I'd prefer not to buy a whole new pen just to get a stub. My Carene is a F point and not really appropriate for stubbing.

Waterman have a factory stub. It's a broad stub.

You can buy separate sections for your Carene.

If your Carene is fairly new, Waterman can even do a nibswap for you.

Obtaining a Carene Stub:

Here in the UK all in-stock Carene's are fitted with Medium nibs. Some online retailers offer to change it out for another size at no cost.

As stated by D.ick Waterman will swap it but you have to send them the complete pen and they assess is before swapping.

Most, if not all, Carene's I have monitored on the bay have either M, F or EF nibs fitted, it is very rare to see a Stub. That can also be said for single sections advertised for sale or auction.

You can buy new sections from a couple of well known online retailers but the minimum price I have seen is £77 and the max close on £100 which is rather steep. This is expensive when comparing it to buying a complete pen during Amazon's OFFER period for £80 and then posting it to Waterman at the cost of around £5 to have them change out the section. Here you get a complete pen for little more. Amazon even have some at £65 at the moment making a possible change much cheaper.

All this aside, I am not a great fan of the Stub, but much prefer a nice smooth M or F.

Hi Bemo,

D.ick is right. In fact the good folks at Waterman did a nib swap for my 4 year old Sonnet! I've written about it here : https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/292563-customer-support-and-after-sales-service-the-way-it-should-be/

I have interacted with them several times and the support team are superb ! I have no affiliations, just my experience.

Waterman ---- Sonnet? Wasn't that Parker? ;)

I'm teasing you a bit, in the end it all goes to Sanford, which is Waterman and Parker together. (with some other brands thrown in)

And as Force says: they will assess the nib. If it looks pristine and the can use it again they will swap, but if it shows distinctive signs of use they might not.

In my case, I let my B&M-shop handle both of them. Last time he called Sanford importer, asked them to send the stub, received it 2 days later, exchanged the nibs and send the M-nib back to Sanford. Neat. That was about 3 yrs ago.

LOL, you are right D.ick. I meant Newellco which owns both Parker and Waterman brands; somehow in my mind, they both merged  ; I'll blame that on age or/and the single malt ... *hick*

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
