Some Kind Of Waterman With A Fantastic #5 Stub Nib...

Recommended Posts

Here is a mystery Waterman pen with an amazing #5 nib which is either a nicely worn in italic or a very sharp stub. There is tipping but it is ground flat and the tip is quite narrow with cross strokes are quite fine. In any case it is an amazing nib and a little springy to boot.

2 problems (possibly related) are that

1. Flow is inconsistent. I wonder if the feed needs to be heat set?

2. The cap is a disaster. Like some kind of sc-fi dystopian hellscape of junk and corrosion and no amount of cleaning gets it clean. Some of the gunk inevitably ends up on the pen. I keep at it but it is just a green gooey nightmare in there.

What the heck is this pen? I'd like to look for another just to get the cap. Possibly a broken one.

Also the feed is missing a few fins.

I thought it was a Crusader as well because of slip cap. But none of the Crusaders I've seen come with that kind of cap.

I tried the ultrasonic cleaner. It did't help much. I think it needs to be scraped out with something pretty harsh make a hard brush of some kind.

from that web site: "time is not kind to the caps of Crusaders." ha! true.

thanks.

And the feed doesn't match the crusaders I have seen. What's of course defeats changed over time and I just haven't happen to see one like mine.

You may want to consider finding a nice Crusader-family pen with a boring nib and transplant this beauty of a nib into it.

Best, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
