Inks That Clean

DrDebG

Recommended Posts

I have heard several times and in several threads that there are some inks that will "clean" your pen, particularly the inside of a demonstrator pen or ink converter. Sailor Doyou is one of them. What are the inks that you consider are "cleaning" inks?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Cleaning or NotInky T O D - Cleaning Between Inking - What's Your Process?http://www.fountainp...s-your-process/

Thank you for putting me on to this thread. There are some great cleaning suggestions here. I am a bit of a clean freak when it comes to my pens, as I clean them all at least once every two weeks.

What I am really asking, however, is about inks that seem to clean out inky residue and stains from cartridges. In one of the threads I read tonight, someone mentioned that Iroshizuku Kosumosu actually cleaned a bluish residue from a demonstrator pen. I have also heard that Sailor Jentle Doyou will do something similar. I was wondering if there are other inks that do that as well.

Look farther down into the thread. You can see my results from Rattler Red. Others have reported great success with Sailor Doyou.

I think any vintage Sheaffer Skrip should be tested, because I think it would work. I've also found that washing my pens between uses with a water glycerin mix really helps.

How much glycerin do you add to your water?

I flush thoroughly with water until there is no visible ink left. My normal protocol is to clean all of the pens that I use usually each week, and no longer than every two weeks. But some inks just leave a bit of visible residue inside the converter, and likely inside the nib and feed. Call me a perfectionist, but I really hate to see that. I've tried Goulet Pen Wash and that is pretty good with all but the most stubborn inks. I am still trying to get Apache Sunset out of one of my converters. Yama Dori also seems to "stain" the inside of the converter.

Given the great range of various ink compositions, all the chemicals and the alchemy on top of it, it would be a surprise if some inks did not not "clean out"certain other inks. Surfactants alone could explain this.

We need to our pool information and experince.

I started out with some of this and cleans the pens out faster than you can imagine.

Thank you for the great suggestion.

How much did you use in your water?

Does it add/subtract tension to the piston in your converter?

I agree, and this is why I started this thread. There are "ink masters" who have lots of knowledge about the properties of their inks. It would be great to get a list going - similar to the lists of inks that shade, inks that sheen, this would be inks that clean.

If you have a pen that has a lot of surface tension or adhesion, use this between cleaning and you should be good to go.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
