What Vintage Mb Is This?

Hi all,

I recently bought a vintage Montblanc fountain pen and I would greatly apreciate you help in identifying the model and aprox. the manufacturing date.

It was sold to me as being aprox. 80 years old, but I do not think it is true.

The pen cap has the montblanc star not in white, it is an outline, as you can see from picture no. 2.

The size is 12.7 cm capped, 11.7 cm uncapped, 14.4 cm posted and max width 1.2 cm.

It is a piston filler with a bluish ink window.

On the nib there is Montblanc, 14C, Montblanc, 585 written.

What is absolutely awesome is that the nib is a stub, and a flexible one at that. Have you heard about a vintage MB flexible stub? I thought they were making oblique nibs, not stubs. Is it rare?

And now the pictures

The pen is a MB 342 from the 50th's so it´s not 80 years old yet. That nib is not rare. Looks to be a BB nib and they are stubish some times.

34X line was an entry level pen from MB, aiming at the school students. They tend to be excellent writers and are sturdy pens! Congratulations :)

By the way, the cap should screw all the way in and cover the inkwindow. The cap shows some heavy deformation, maybe was confronted with excessive heat at some point in life....

I have checked the 342 on ebay. Some are different, one looks like mine. So they made different versions of it?

Quoting your first reply here:

"I have checked the 342 on ebay. And they all have white cap, not like mine. Also the nibs look different."

There are 3 versions of the 342. Yours is the first one. Only the last one had the star in white. Yours is the version from 1951 to 1953, i believe.

There are 2 more variation till 1960.

Check carefully and you will see that on ebay not all is correct and the variations are not always all represented.

Best regards

Your are welcome :)

Here is a picture of the 3 variations side by side.

This picture is from the Collectible stars book from 1946 till 1979, IMHO the best out there for MB. If you like collecting MB I suggest you buy one, it has great information.

You can find the book on ebay, being sold by one of the authors or in their webpage. They also have another book about MB that covers MB production since they started till the 40´s. Great books!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
