Bumper Crop Week

This week I received three pens that I have been waiting on for awhile. I recently ordered a Skilcraft Executive pen and a Pilot Prera both in F nib. Previous to that I ordered a Platinum Plaisir. All three came in during the last two days. The Plaisir wasn't due to arrive from Japan until mid-December. Pleased to get it earlier than expected. The Skilcraft is an all metal body fountain pen in dark blue. It is a slim line pen, so I thought that I might try it as the price was not bad at 12.49 usd.

Also the makers of the pen employ the blind to make/assemble the pens. The pen is rated as a "F" but being an American pen, it writes like a Japanese "M". Not a bad thing, I just prefer the "F". It skipped a bit initially but smoothed out and writes quite well now. Not scratchy, not skipping, fairly smooth for a pen of this price point. The pen is heavy though, and the when the cap is posted it feels almost back heavy. I like to write with the cap posted but I can see where this may be the exception. The pen lays down a good line of ink, and is wet enough. I feel that this is a good pen for the money and if I want to get into nib work, this may be a good one to start with as an inexpensive pen. The pen that arrived with this one was the Pilot Prera. I bought these two almost on a whim. The Pilot Prera is way light, and small. I expected the small, but not to be this light. You almost don't feel it in your hand. It took a little while to get used to writing with it. It has the "F" steel nib and is in slate color, writes really smooth. I think smoother than my Metro. You can't really write with this without it being posted. It lays down a nice wet line and not scratching or skipping at all. Another great pen. This one is replacing my Pilot Metropolitan as my shirt pocket carry. Nice and small and light. The third pen I picked up at the Post Office as it was sent registered mail from Japan. The Platinum Plaisir. This is also a "F" steel nib. The weight is pretty much like the Metro, it also is a blue color. It has pretty much the same dimensions as the Metro but my reason for getting it was, it was cheap at 11.61 usd, and I wanted to see if the nib protector in the cap really served to keep the ink from drying out on the nib while capped. I also have a Preppy on order and it is going to be an "EF" and I figured since they both have the same type of nib, if I like the EF, I can just swap them out. This one also writes better than I expected. No skipping, no scratching, just slight feedback that you might expect from a "F" nib. This also lays down a nice line of ink as well. All were inked with the cartridges that they came with. When they run dry, I'll just fill the carts with the inks I have. I didn't rinse any of these pens out upon arrival and prior to inking them. I was too impatient to see how they performed. I know I should have but there were not ill effects from missing this operation. I am very happy with the smoothness and fine writing I get from this pens. I know none of them are high end pens but this furthers my experience beyond the Pilot Metro which was also a great pen from the start. No pictures since I'm not very good with putting photos on the internet, sorry. Just excited about my new pens and wanted to share.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
