Kobe (神戸市 Kōbe-shi) is the sixth-largest city in Japan and is the capital city of Hyōgo Prefecture. It is located on the southern side of the main island of Honshū, on the north shore of Osaka Bayand about 30 km (19 mi) west of Osaka. With a population around 1.5 million, the city is part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kyoto. Its name comes from "kanbe" (神戸), an archaic title for supporters of the city's Ikuta Shrine. Kobe became one of Japan's 17 designated cities in 1956.

Kobe is famous for its shirines and nioce architecture but among fountain pen and ink afficionados the name Kobe cause increased heart-rate. The city is a home of Nagasawa-Kobe stationery shop that offers incredible lione of more than fifty inks made by Sailor.

My master - plan is to prepare comparison of full line of Nagasawa-Kobe inks. Not an easy task as they're not the most obtainable inks on the market, but hopefully I'll manage to do it :)

At the moment Nagasawa-Kobe offers 52 inks:

Souraken Tea Green is very cool green. I guess this one could become my favourite green in the Nagasawa-kobe line.

To my eyes this looks much like #49, Kitano Olive Green...although I suspect I am a tad color blind.

Excellent review. Thanks so much for the time you put into your reviews.

#49 Kitano*--like #1 Rokko*--is stonier than the earthy #34 Souraken, however, both colors are gorgeous.

I'll definitely pick-up Souraken when it becomes available.

Well it's close relative to Rokko Green but, as stated before, lighter. Apart from good looks it lubricates the nib very well.

Claudia - and have you tried Maiko Green? It's cool as well. To be honest I consider Nagasawa-kobe inks the best inks line ever created. Of course there are inks I dislike but the colors aren't boring and most of them share great writing properties. Once they're attainable again, I'll want to stock some of them (now that I've tried almost full line, I can say firmly that Old Foreigner Ward Sepia is my favourite one. Exceptional ink. Also Souraken Tea Green, Maiko Green, Ijinkan Red and, surprisinly Kan-Cho Midnight Blue are amazing).

Yes, Sourakuen is a wonderful green and particularly lovely on off-white paper, as in your last picture. Thanks for your reviews - these are peerless inks and we all need the full set.

Nope.. haven't tried the Maiko green... so you better put the review up fast... :D :D

I love Sepia and I told you my Ijinkan red did not look like your sample. I will have to get another bottle of that one too... :( :(

And YES... a bottle of #51 Midnight Blue is on my list too...

Wow, Visvamitra, souraken tea green is a beautiful shading ink, and I love it on cream-colored paper. Comprehensive review, as always. Thank you.

I love this colour. :D I think I did a comparison somewhere with this and a few other really close greens, one by Kobe, one not.

Excellent review. Thanks so much for the time you put into your reviews.

It appears to be lighter and a tad more yellow than Kitano Olive.

This one is a a definite maybe....

Thanks for the review. It's a Herculean task.

Visvamitra, this is another of your stellar reviews! I can be pretty confident after one of your reviews whether or an ink belongs on my "must have" list.

You've shown me Kobe #34 Souraken Tea Green is a must have! Thank you very much for all the work on the Nagasawa-Kobe line of inks :-)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
