Diamine Chocolate Brown

Here is a review of Diamine's Chocolate Brown, a dark brown, slightly reddish. One some papers it appears much like a chocolate, others a little darker. Diamine has been making inks for a long time, and that shows in the ink's ability to "just work". It has some subtle shading which is nice, but they seem to use the same underlying red which seems to be not very waterfast. The ink basically lifts right up when blotted when hit with water.

The photos didn't work out so well, the light being poor recently, so the ink appears darker than in reality. The ink is not a replica for PPM as it is too warm, and a bit lighter.

Tested on Mohawk via Linen, Hammermill 28 lb inkjet paper. I've run out of my little Tomoe River booklet.

Nice review! Thanks!! I too find it a good quality of an ink that it looks different on different papers and after different drying times. But it does look a bit too red to me, for a real piece of chocolate (although yes, they're all different).

Guess what I want now...

No, seriously, I just got a sample vial of this ink because a friendcoughenablercough kept writing to me with it. It's in a Safari with EF nib and has been refilled once already.

Great review, thanks! Now where did I leave that Hershey's mini....

Very nice review. This is my very favorite dark brown which I always have loaded. It as you said just a very "warm" color.

I must have a look at this one. I'm currently using Macassar and Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown, alternated, in a Pelikan M800 Burnt Orange. Maybe the Chocolate could be next! Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the precise review. I liked this ink a lot but I gave it up in favour of Macassar (no reddish undertone). Now I'm considering moving on to R&H Sepia, which seems to work better with broad nibs. Taste may evolve but Chocolate Brown remains a good ink, typical of Diamine.

This is my go to brown, and it does color differently with different papers and especially nibs. In a F or XF, it's Hershey's all the way. But start with a wider nib that can lay it down some, and it's deep, dark, Godiva truffle. A wonderful dark, and a surprisingly different look. Very well behaved in all situations I have thrown at it.

Another terrific review. Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
