I had considered getting a pink one, but every time I looked at them they looked kinda, well, cheap and cheesy, to the point that I was contemplating getting a purple Al-Star instead (or at least looking at them). But if the new Safari color is going to be purple, I'll wait and take a peek when they come out, and see which I like better.

I didn't think I wanted a Safari at all because I didn't like the grip. But then someone gave me a metal-bodies Jinhao 599 and the grip was... not too bad.... So, apparently it's going to be a "wait and see" situation, which is good for my wallet regardless of which I end up with (if either).

There are a lot of pens that might look cheap and cheesy, but we use them anyway.

When we have pens that are first class most of us still use cheaper pens. Are we just pen gluttons? Just musing.

I like purple, and I might get one of these purple pens in spite of not really wanting to buy any more.

It probably won't happen but a matte purple LAMY with a black clip and black nib would be awesome

I don't generally like purple, but I'm excited for all the fanbase that was waiting for it, and we actuallty need more matte Safaris. I actually have the purple-black AL-star and I quite like it. It's a gothic vampire purple. I hope they don't go violet, unless they go all the way in the blue spectrum...

I hated them, until I tried someone else's. Now I have four. I love the grip, at least my arthritic hands do: I can write longest with a Safari or AL Star.

I got two clear 599s at $2 each, just to see, and I have to say not bad at all!

Fingers crossed that this will not be the disappointment the AlStar was for me. I dream of that perfect blend that leans neither red nor blue, just like in the basic 8 Crayola box.

Even though me and Lamy nibs aren't big time friends (the QC is all over the board), a purple one will look good with my growing collection. Even though the nibs are ehh, the pens look so great in all the bright colors!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
