Burgundy Suggestions, Please!

Sailor Kenshin

Recommended Posts

What I have:

Levenger Shiraz (a bit thick and leans pink)

Sailor Oku-Yama (maybe too brown?)

J Herbin Rouge Opera (not intense enough)

J H Rouge Bourgogne (ditto)

What I want:

A true, deep burgundy, neither pink nor purple. Wet, well-behaved ink, commonly available in the USA.

Who's got suggestions for me? :)

What are your favorites? Thanks.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

My favorite is "Binder Burgundy" which is a mix of 1 part Waterman Violet and 1 part Shaeffer Red. It is a very good burgundy. I think Diamine Syrah was designed to match it, but I'm not positive.

Thanks. I've heard of this mix, but I'm after a bottle of burgundy, and I don't have either of the component inks.

+1 Binder Burgundy. Beautiful, rich, nice shading, well-behaved, OK for vintage pens, readily available, inexpensive.

Monteverde Burgundy? Or maybe De Atramentis Merlot?

And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

Noodler's Burgundy is good, but leans towards violet. Levenger Claret and de Atramentis Bordeaux are also lovely, but they lean towards red. Private Reserve Burgundy Mist is unusually dark, but it sheens nicely. R & K Alt Bordeaux is a good color, but it dries flat and dull (in my opinion).

I do like Diamine Merlot, if you don't mind a somewhat dry (no pun intended!) ink; it also has fairly nice sheen.

In spite of the name, Levenger's Pomegranate might be a good choice for a deep, rich wine color.

Hope this helps!

Alongside Richard Binder's Burgundy and D's Shirah, how about:

De A Spätburgunder

MB Bordeaux

MB Burgundy Red

PR Burgundy Mist

Pre-Slovenien Sheaffer Burgundy ?

I like Binder Burgundy too, and Diamine Syrah and Merlot are both very good burgundy red inks.

Buying a bottle of each of the Waterman Violet and Sheaffer Red would be a reasonable price option, if you had an empty bottle and made up some Binder Burgundy to put into it.

I have settled on Diamine Syrah as my only burgundy ink.

A.

Like in the Skrip inkwell bottle?

Yes,that's the one, alhough it's more like a magenta than any "real" burgundy or bordeaux.

B. Check out the new Octopus Burgundy. That review also shows a good comparison of inks (judging by the colour).

Sailor, I just sent you a letter with a few reds that I have inked up at the moment.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
