The Matador Thread

kawuska,

Thank you (and Tom too) for that wonderful image of 'Der Papierhandler'

Parcival,

It is good you uploaded those pages as a .pdf Thanks !

(When I translated the Marshall book in Spanish I insisted he included Matador, since in Spain there is a great interest for this brand, probably due to the use of a Spanish word [Matador / Toreador = Bullfighter] in the Spanish forum there are often threads related to Matador and I often quote all of you guys from this thread and invite them to participate here, at least three have done it).

I also found that manual and there's one thing that may be interesting: Marshall claims there have been 56 different models in 1939 catalog.Where's that catalog?? ;)

At Los Angeles pen show I found this curious Matador I have not heard about before, it is like a Parker Duofold.

142 mm closed and 132 without the cap, a large pen.

The clip imprint is Matador, PBF, and it is numbered 914 on the barrel it is printed Ideal gold ant the nib is Ideal 4 1st quality 14 Car

Do any of you have more information?

I have read about Ideal as a sub brand of Astoria but also a Kaweco Ideal... Seen a lot of Ideal nibs, and I have a small Ideal with a wrong nib... Do not know anything about that brand...

Ariel,

I just noticed that on an Siebert&Lowen document offered on ebay, there is Ideal-Gold 911 listed.Document dates back to 1929.

I saw that, thank you !

When I first saw Azuniga's black pen, my first-glance reaction was 'probably a parts pen...', but when I saw the 914 marking on blind cap, it changed to "Wow - that's neat". Like Kawuska, I'm wondering "where's that catalog?" which will show pictures of various models and perhaps help explain their numbering system and other things. ;^) ... and by the way, nice catch noticing the Ideal-Gold 911 reference on the Siebert & Löwen document.

I couldn't tell if the Orange 934 is also marked Ideal Gold on the barrel; is it?

Hi folks,

I have a few bits of S&L paper, and one of them from 1929 lists an Ideal Gold 912, 913, and 914. I've attached a shot of it.

I have a pen of the same brand, but it does not look like a manufactured by Matador.

Parcival,

is your pen Oxford or Oxford Everdurable?

Oxford Everdurable, but I guess my pen is from a Danish manufacturer.

I have a Wahl Oxford which is obviously made by Wahl, but among my pens there is one sold to me as a Matador manufactured for the Danish market that now it seems could be accurate.

It is an Oxford and on the barrel it says Everdurable Big (although it is hard to read it) and it has an Acca 3 14 kt nib, and Acca is a Danish pen of course…

It measures 13.2 cm with the cap on.

Hi Ariel

According to T. Neureither, ACCA is a German brand.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
