Tomoe River Journals And More

Today I will show you something different. I was asked to rebind a paperback edition of a book into something that had a Medieval look.

This was the book as I purchased it:

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y307/Layra_Leopluredon/image_zpsvnb3pi01.jpeg

I removed the covers and trimmed the left border in order to get rid of the nasty glue. It would have been different if the book had been in signatures... but, alas, it was originally in single sheets, so I just trimmed, rounded and glued again the book, while adding some marks to reinforce it with cord.

Then I backed the spine as usual...

Then I proceeded to work on the covers using a heated tool.

The look of the covers.

And all together :).

Hope you enjoyed this post :).

Have a nice day!!!

Really nice work. I have seen a lot of journals but your work stands head and shoulders above anything that I have seen.

About Tomoe River paper and 4000 sheets order from Japan, her is the weight:

A4 52GSM

1 sheet => 21x29.7=623.7 cm2 = 0.06237m2

4000 sheets => 0.06237m2 x 4000 = 249.48m2

Multiplying by paper weight per m2 => 249.48*52 = 12972.96 grams = 12.973 kg

8000 sheets = 25.946 kg

A4 Novi

21.9*31=678.9=0.06789m2

4000 sheets = 271.56m2

271.56*52=14121.12 grams = 14.12 kg

8000 sheets = 28.24kg

You ordered Novi or standard?

Honestly, there isn't much packing. More like 400-500 grams of it. I have ordered 4000 sheets once. But since I can order anytime I like, I didn't bother with 8000.

Have around 800 remaining, maybe in a few months I'll place another order.

Edit: you should talk directly to Tomoegawa. They offer bigger sheets like 788mm*1091mm (shiroku-ban). I talked directly to them and MOQ was too high for personal usage. Maybe for making journals it may make more sense. But it's a lot.

4000 sheets of this size paper would weigh more than 200 kgs and to reach MOQ, you may need shipping containers. :P

What is the weight limitation of Japan post? I am thinking of importing some sheets which may get too heavy, maybe 12000 sheets.

Also, is sea shipping trackable?

Thank you very much for your kind words! I ordered A4 size of Tomoe River.

Very interesting what you say about Tomoegawa... to be honest, I was so lost the first time I purchased Tomoe River! I will certainly check it out :).

I saw somewhere 30 kg, but I have no confirmation of that.

That is quite interesting, as I was thinking in doing similar.

And also interesting, about the tracking by sea, does someone know?

Thank you. I checked and found that I cannot receive parcels to my country above 20kgs in weight by any method except EMS. :(

Doing 2 shipments of 6000 sheets each via EMS is ¥47,600

Doing 3 shipments of 4000 sheets each via sea mail is ¥23,100

Doing a single shipment via FedEx is above ¥100,000 :P

Sea mail seems like the way to go if it provides tracking.

Is EMS the equivalent of saying air mail? Anyway, that is very interesting info. I didn't even check FedEx, as I know from previous experience they are terribly expensive (sending a journal across the Atlantic ocean is 90€, while regularly for less than 500g is 12,70€ by national post and 42€ for DHL).

Sea mail, totally my way to go from now on.

Not really, EMS arrives in 3 days subject to customs whereas airmail takes 7-10 days. Both arrive via air, but EMS is on priority. Airmail costs more than EMS but is slower for some reason.

I would rather split the shipment than go for FedEx. I am trying the waybill thing for which the shipment needs to be delivered to the airport and is loaded to aircraft and you are given a waybill number.

It's delivered to the destination airport and you need to appoint a customs agent to clear the parcel. They charge 20-30 euros here (converted to euros) shipping charges should be equivalent to airmail but you can ship something like 20000-30000 sheets.

I'll call a customs agent in a few minutes and ask him for a charge schedule for shipping rates.

As for sea shipping, I am okay with that if it provides tracking. I have asked a friend in Japan to call the post office and ask about sea shipping and tracking.

Hello everybody!

I am sorry for the lack of news. I've been overloaded with work and I also started a new job, so I haven't had much time for anything. I will try to post more often again.

Some days ago, I made a small photo album. These were the printed pages:

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y307/Layra_Leopluredon/image_zpsoui0gqdx.jpeg

I sewn the signatures in a French stitch and put Canson Miteintes as endpapers. You can see how thin the whole book body was.

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y307/Layra_Leopluredon/image_zps8iwphrlr.jpeg

Then I backed the spine with some cloth.

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y307/Layra_Leopluredon/image_zpsyf12aoqu.jpeg

I put black cloth on the spine and some other pictures on the front and back of the covers.

These are the pictures of the final work. I am pretty happy with how it looked in the end.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
