Graf Von Faber-Castell: Stone Grey

I present to test the ink Graf von Faber-Castell Stone Grey with a very nice gray color. Ink writes very well, nice flowing pen on paper. Drying also at a good level. If I had to choose among gray colors, this would take first place. Therefore, I sincerely recommend!

I tried my hand at greys, PR Gray Flannel, Diamine Grey, CdA Infinite Grey, 150th Silver Fox and to me they have all under delivered.

 

I must say I've had my eye on this one after seeing so many of Attika89's beautiful sketches but this looks likely to disappoint too.

 

My fave by far is Noodler's Lexington. I think I'll park my grey search there.

My very favorite is Herbin's Cacao du Bresil, which is only "grey" in some pens. It's complex like that.

 

A distant second would be Iroshizuku Kiri-same, which is beautiful but somewhat disappointingly demands premium paper and won't dip.

I know you've seen this, but I'll post it again with trepidation of hijacking this thread. Notice how in the written name, Cacao appears "brown" from my Lamy 2000 (top) and distinctly "grey" from my Conklin (bottom). The color wash falls somewhere between, in that brown/grey/lavender area that is Nirvana to me.

Ah, yes. Thank you for the samples! I wish Kiri-same were a smidge darker, but I love it.

One commentator above wrote that Stone Grey was, "... uninspired. Too clean, too cold." But that's the essence of a true mid-toned gray.

 

When looking for a gray I don't want any green or purple undertones -- I want gray. I feel the same way with black -- I want black, not gray/blue/brown. And with a medium blue I want blue, not green and not purple.

 

The bottom line is that Stone Grey is not confused, it knows what color it's trying to be. So I like it very much (even though it runs dry I my Kaweco Liliput with the 1.1 nib).

an even darker grey is Levenger's Greystoke, another excellent performing grey color ink.

However, I'm not generally a fan of grey ink. The one I use when I want grey is Montblanc Albert Einstein
