Do those need to be painted?

Do you have some to fit the SJ? Will you be selling them at the Ohio Pen show? I'm a relative newbie and not sure if I'm going to the show, this might help me make my decision!

For now, I have only the cap jewel for the J models. Doing the smaller ones for the barrel jewel and the LJ/SJ pens might be something I consider if these are received well.

What were the original jewels made of?

I've never tested one but I would guess injection molded ABS.

ABS makes a lot of sense. By the way, Acetal or Delrin (same thing) can molded easily enough and to tight tolerances as well. But I don't understand the choice of Acetal as the material of choice for jewels. ABS should also be cheaper than Acetal. I also think that Acrylic should do the trick for jewels and it can be polished to an awesome shine. Acrylic is a bit more brittle than ABS or Acetal but in my opinion I think that they would work well. Plus all of these materials can be tumble polished. My question when I read this was whether the demand would justify the cost for even a single cavity mold. But gweimer1 is thinking ahead of the rest of us. He may have just cornered the market on restoration jewels. :)

I hope that anything I said here is out of line. I sure didn't intend for it to be. I am not an engineer but I do have some limited knowledge of plastics albeit from 30 years or so ago, but ABS, Acrylic, Acetal were certainly materials that I have had some experience with. I am not an expert even though I had people rely on my knowledge back in the day when I sold plastics. Just a humble opinion. I would take the opinion of a plastics engineer over my opinion anyday.

Delrin would have come along a little late for the J jewels. Delrin was also expensive in relative terms. I'm not sure ABS is the material that was used but rather it is just a guess.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
