The Edson - Discontinuation

Did they always come with the self colored converter? I've bought some cobalt blue recently that just had standard converters.

As noted by Force, yes. However, I see them for sale separately all the time for a very premium price. I have also heard they were actually not great converters so some folks swapped to a standard waterman converter. I have not used on myself as I left it in the box as a mint example. My sapphire Edson had a regular converter when I bought it second hand.

No. I suspect purely supply and demand. I have never seen one for sale on the high street.

That's a pity! One day I probably would have bought one. But of course they are expensive and at the moment just too expensive for me. Would have been nice to know that Edsons are still available when I will be able to get one.

Nope. None of the edson's I've bought new in the last two years came with converters. 2 sapphire blue and two black diamond. Maybe waterman is saving money by not including converters.

Mine (black diamond) also came with a regular converter, and it was bough brand new about 3 months ago.

Did you buy those directly from stores or official suppliers? I've got several Edsons, of which Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire come with matching-color converters, except the Diamond comes with regular one.

Hmmm, buying an Edson without its coloured converter sound suspicious. I bought one of the last of the Sapphire Edsons, with the barrel button, and it came with a blue converter. As far as I know the Diamond Black (more a grey) is supplied with a standard clear converter but I am not sure if it's the current plastic mouth or the old style.

I confirm that the Diamond Black comes with current plastic mouth. I was a bit disappointed first time seeing the Black Edson.

Another Sapphire sold tonight for £500 (£450 after fees) on the bay. Most currently listed are start or BIN prices. Those that are low priced are damaged or short of original candy.

Another Sapphire currently under the hammer and already at £400

What about the Edson rollerballs? Are those used or collected as widely as the fountain pens?

I have an Emerald Green rollerball, unused, in box, and don't know if I should sell it or keep it?

It must be at least ten or fifteen years old, I surmise.

IMHO the Rollerball Edson still be sought after as firstly it's an Edson, and secondly its parts (cap, barrel) are interchangeable with the fountain pen, so literally one can buy a spare Edson nib and and hence have a 2-in-1 pen.

I think the space inside the rb barrel is too small to fit the standard converters. You have to use a cartridge or a mini converter. But basically you are correct in that you can screw a FP nib section into the pen. It will be hard to find a green section to match, however.

Sorry but I think maybe not. Like other Waterman RB's the cap will have a nylon insert that contacts either the refill tip or the section tip to prevent ink drying out. Put it onto an FP section and the nib may be damaged.

As for the value of a mint boxed verte RB, I would think it is not too far off the value of an FP...maybe more if two or more people want it. I have never seen one for sale or a BP for that matter. Pretty much the same goes for the Ruby.

Can you who observed Waterman for a long time or have contacts maybe tell whether Waterman is going to replace the Edson with a new model in the midterm?

Or will the other pens just move up?

In my humble opinion the Élégance and the Exception are not as representative as a flagship pen.

I do not believe they will replace it on a cost/sales basis. When has anyone walked into their local pen emporium and found an Edson in the show case. Certainly none one that I visited. I can say the same for the Elegance not that I would have wanted to handle it mind. Way too much bling.

I totally agree.

From Waterman Customer Service...

At this point we don't have any plan to add new products to our collection.

This may change in the future but till now we are not aware of any changes.

I can therefore confirm you that in this moment our top range pen is the Waterman Exception.

Did you see an Élégance or Exception displayed? I don't live in London or France where you can find way more stores which offer Waterman pens, but even if: I too think the Élégance is really showy but not elegant in my opinion. Also it is nothing special, neither design wise nor concerning materials, filling systems or the nib. The same goes for the Exception.

The Exception has a uncommon shape but this doesn't make it unique. And there is nothing that would continue the uncommoness by adding something special. If you compare these pens to the Edson they are dissapointing in my opinion.

Sure the GT Edson is quite showy as well. But I think it works as a flagship and role model of a brand. Whereas I would wonder who would buy an Élégance or Exception when seeing them in a local store. Knowing how many Exceptions and Élégance they sold in comparison to the Edson would be interesting. If you are going to spend several hundred euro, dollars, pounds on a Waterman pen, because you want a product of quality and probably eye-catchiness I see no way how either the Exception or the Élégance could outdo the Edson.

Enough complaining for now.

The highest model in my local outlets is the Carene and in most cases they only have the Black Sea gloss and Marine Amber.

As far as I can tell from visiting the Waterman website, the Edson has indeed been discontinued!

But all may not be lost, as although they show that the category is currently not available on their website, the Edson is still listed as one of their pens.

Maybe we will see an Edson II, as we saw the Expert II.

This is a very sad day for me indeed, as this is one of my favorite pens and was in fact the first decent pen that I purchased.

This was the pen that I just had to have and it's the reason why I collect pens today.

I happen to have three of these pens in my collection: Two Sapphire blue (one with the gold button at the end of the barrel and one without) and one Edson LE.

These pens will be part of my collection for the rest of my life.

Waterman did produce these pens for a very long time and most collectors probably have at least one of these pens in their collections by now.

Realistically, there are probably enough of these pens in circulation and I suppose the world has taken up as many Edson's as it can in a realistic sense, as far as economic viability for Waterman is concerned.

They need come up with something new and it must be an evolution on the Edson, as it's almost the perfect pen as far as I am concerned, bar a few minor faults.

If they indeed come up with a new Edson, I hope they find a way to make it a piston filler, while still maintaining it's streamlined organic look, as this would really enhance this type of pen and would allow it to be a truly high end design, which would have the likes of Montblanc running scared.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
