sup ppl. So I got an Ahab and my oh my! Those 20 dollars are worth every cent and more... I even love the smell. Reminds me of my grandpa's Vacumatic. I swapped the stock "flexi" nib for Zebra G and the thing became insane! Couldn't be happier.

One question to other Ahab owners though... I first filled the pen with Sailor Jentle Green (ever so exquisite!) but noticed that it stained the section as well as the reservoir. After subsequent fillings with the same ink and a transition to Platinum Carbon Black Ink (ftw) it seems unlikely that the now amber-colored demonstrator plastic in the section is ever going back to its original clear (yet with a tinge of purple color).

Is this normal? I will be going eyedropper style as soon as the stores open tomorrow (so I can get me some silicone grease) and I just want to know for sure if the staining I described above is the regular Ahab behaviour so I'll be prepared to get a permanently stained barrel too.

Not that I care too much, to be honest ;) Just wanted to ask. Thanks for looking at my post!

cheers

Say it isn't so!

How could an ink EVER stain a pen? How is this even possible?

Well... inks don't stain cartridges, converters or some acrylics I've seen. I've never used a demonstrator pen before. Thanks for your smartass reply though.

Relax, and you're welcome. You're new and it's an old joke.

And try some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip, or hand sanitizer on a q-tip. It's been known to assist in breaking the affinity certain inks have with certain plastics.

Btw, most pens get stained, but it's only the demonstrators we actually care about.

Here was my Ahab after it's first fill AND a sonic cleaning.

BTW, Diamine Grape does stain.

And here it is today.

Message:  Yes, the [demonstrator] ahabs are susceptible to stains, but the stains give it character and I love how my stubbed ahab writes.

Hello amberleadavis.

Those multiple stains certainly make your pen unique! And if it writes great too then that pen is truly special in my point of view. I don't have a demonstrator pen but now I am itching to get one.

One question though, do the left over stains have any adverse effect on the new ink you will be using?

Thanks

Yup.  In fact a main purpose of demonstrators is to show where stains happen.

Dear @amberleadavis,

Thank you very much for your reply! It was very informative and I love the pictures of your Ahab. As I am entirely new to demonstrators I didn't knew what to expect. I am perfectly fine with the wabi-sabi that pen will attain.

I am now sanding off the feed so the pen will receive the zebra G nib. Before I modified the nib instead, just to test whether that combo was what I wanted without compromising the feed. Yes! I am very happy with the extra flex.

I promise to post some images tomorrow. Got into an accident today (got run over by a car, basically). Everything's fine. Nothing is broken but that slowed my progress considerably :(

As many people have already said, staining and weird dried ink remnants are part of living with demonstrators. You're lucky you have experienced it in a relatively inexpensive pen. As a recent collector, my first experience with a demonstrator was also the most devastating. I inked a Visconti Opera Crystal only to realize the ink I used stained the barrel completely pink. The kind folks at Coles replaced the barrel for me so it's now pristine again. But there is an internal ring that drives me crazy because it traps ink and I can never remove the ink.

I have found there are a few ways to live with a demonstrator.

- Use ones where you can disassemble

- Use very safe, neutral PH non staining non saturated inks

- Use pens you don't mind staining

Dear Amberleadavis,

Haven't tried customizing the Ahab's nib yet due to lack of dremel  -_-  I'd like to do a Nakaya flex-style mod carving, as opposed to just trimming semicircles, but that will need for me to build my skills a bit. Will get to it at some point.

The enormous amount of force used to flex the stock nib made me go the Zebra way and, must say, I'll keep this pen as-is.

Maybe I'll get another Ahab (what a dignified pen) in the future to play around with the nib.

Dear Gerigo,

Good advice!

I hope the attachment shows, since I can't seem to upload a pic via its url http://imgur.com/vK7Gfp6

Once again thanks all for replying to this post and make it so rich.

cheers!
