Pilot Sections: Are They Interchangeable?

Hi All!

I've recently bought a Pilot Custom 845 in red urushi which I absolutely love, to the point that I would really like to have a number of different nibs to use with the pen. Unfortunately it looks like Pilot doesn't sell individual nibs or nibs units. So here comes the question: which other Pilot pens have a section that is interchangeable with the Custom 845? It seems to me that the most plausible would be the Pilot Custom 743. Is this correct? Does anyone have experience?

I'm amazed by the range of nibs available for this pen: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/kogyokudo/item/pilot-fkk-3000r/

If this section were to fit in a Custom 845, I can already see some USD 1.000 flying over to Japan to buy 3-4 Custom 743s and use them as donator pens for the 845 :P

743 section is perfectly compatible with 845. The only difference between the 845 and 743 sections is the plating color on the section threads and the gold content of the nibs.

if you have a spare 1000USD, go for the Yukari Royale.

I actually don't quite have 1000 USD to spare now :D I'm more thinking of getting a few different nib sizes over a period of several months. But I'll get at least one pen soon, hopefully. I'm undecided between the 743 with SF, FA or BB nib.

The Yukari is indeed a great idea, and one day I will get it, but I need a great occasion to justify such a purchase for a single pen (I know, this is not a fully rational line of reasoning, but still...)

The reason for getting more variety with the Custom 845 is also that this pen has a special significance for me, having purchased it to celebrate the birth of my daughter.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
