Pen Shops In Glasgow, Scotland?

PaperQueen

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a pen shop or two (or twelve) to suggest I visit while in Glasgow next spring? Would love to find one that sells a broad selection of Akkerman inks, if possible (much easier to choose colors in person, not to mention more fun).

I'm also making a run to Dumfries and Carlisle (both in Scotland), then Dublin (Ireland) and maybe---iffy---Belfast.

This happy, single malt, Scot-to-the-core chick plans to return home with a few treats. ;)

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

The only one I know of in Glesga is The Pen Shop on Buchanan Street right in the city center. No Akkerman ink though.

Bring me back a chip buttie, black pudding, broon sauce and a bottle of Irn Bru please....lol.

Alba gu Brath!!!

Neither Dumfries nor Carlisle have anything other than the regular W H Smith basic selection. The citizens of Carlisle will be interested to learn they have moved to Scotland, by the way!

Kind regards,

Timothy

My typo, Timothy. :::ooooooooops:::

The trip is primarily* to trace family history, much of which straddles the Scotland/England border (generational births alternated between the two, in a 5-10 mile radius). Thank goodness my record keeping is better than my evening forum posting. ;)

* "Primarily" = Part family history, part continuation of my ongoing search for lovely single malt whiskies, plus a run through Ireland so I can visit Beleek and Waterford (lifelong bucket list).

The Pen Shop is worth a visit even though they don't carry a particularly wide range of stock. The gallery it's in - Princes Square - is very pretty.

I'd like to see color swatches in person before ordering, since samples aren't an option. :::drats:::

It's on my Must Visit list; just being in a pen shop makes me happy. Besides, maybe I'll find something pretty to remember the trip by. ;)

Not sure about Glasgow's offerings, even though I lived there for 10 years, but The Pen Corner in Dublin is a really nice shop in Dublins City Centre.

Great stock of pens, knowledgeable staff, and a good place to waste an hour or two

Wonderful--I'll add it to my list. Thanks, Renfield!

I only get to add that the in person fountain pen shopping is really bad. The Pen Shop is sort of underwhelming, overpriced, and just sad. I do wish I had some nice options to add, even if too late to apply for the question here. It does make me want to go to The Pen Shop anyway to just play with pens I can't justify really buying.

Thanks for chiming in, Kyrina. Sounds like my pen lurking will need to hold off until the second week of the trip (Dublin)---better to spend the time in Scotland researching, looking for good chip buttie (my carb lovin' heart, be still!), and sipping whisky.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
