First Quick Look At The Kingdom Note Crustaceans

Quick swabs of the KN inks. I like them a lot, especially Birgus Latro (greyish brown) and Macrocheira Kaempferi (dull coral). They follow the trend set by the Fungi series: muted colours, with less saturation than the earlier Birds and Insects. They certainly won't appeal to everyone, but I like their distinctiveness.

Apols for photo quality - it's a very dull morning here.

Thanks for the swabs! Now I have a better idea of these inks and confirmed that I won't be getting them. :) I prefer more vibrant colours.

I know exactly where you're coming from. But I'm a bit 'saturated' with vibrant inks at the moment (pun intended LOL). Perhaps I'm in an autumnal mood......... :-)

They look kinda boring to me.

Well Cigar looks boring to a lot of people................ ;)

Seriously, I can understand people not liking them; they aren't the standard Sailor fare. But personally I'd much rather have muted and subtle than some of the christmas tree decoration / My Little Pony-type inks that are in vogue at the moment.

In the end colour preference is a completely personal thing and it's good that people don't always agree. If we all liked the same inks then it would be very boring, and all our writing would look the same too LOL.

Thank you for posting these. I think the sandy/gold/green one is interesting but I agree with Lgsoltek, I prefer more saturated colors.

The Birgus Latro is saturated - it's one of those indeterminate "is it brown, is it grey?" inks. I like it - but then I find Do-you an interesting colour so I guess I'm a bit weird :)

Those are awesome. I can't wait until they become available and normal people can get them. I love brown. I'll get them all.

Well they're all sold out now, so I don't know when they'll have them again. Guess I'll have to contact my usual source, and perhaps they'll get in touch with KN and be able to get an ETA.

Thanks for the nice images.

Thank you for sharing these inks. The colors are exactly what I have found best about all the Sailor inks; each is unique & will not be mistaken for anything except a very special ink that few will have seen before. Sadly I assume these as apparently most of the Sailor special edition inks are going to be seen by "few." I am grateful to have probably a dozen of their inks purchased last (& early this year) & I am grateful for them.

I would be very happy to purchase each of these except the blue. The "earth tones" are my favorites & the blues my least favorite. I just used Bung Box "Nostalgia", have the Onago-Iro "Honey" in a broad nibbed pen & am grateful to have had the opportunity to purchase each of them. Enjoy!

The 'coral' is Macrocheira Kaempferi, or Japanese Giant Spider Crab. It is my favourite of the whole set. I've had a pen inked with it since I got it.

I really like the Crustaceans inks - muted, subtle, not much sheen but good shading.

Here's a note and doodle using Spider Crab.

Hmm. I can definitely save my money by not getting Crab Spider -- that's way too orange a red for my tastes. The swab of the blue one looks pretty, but possibly too light a color for regular use.

The other three? Um, not a big fan of "murky" -- there's tertiary colors and then there's tertiary. I'll leave those to Cyber6 to snag....

It's definitely not supposed to be a "red". It's a perfect coral crab colour. But I agree, it's a very specific taste & won't be liked by some. Edited by migo984

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
